4.0 out of 5 stars Great reissue, with one reservation, March 1, 2003
This review is from: Trouble With Normal (Audio CD)
This 2002 reissue mirrors the other Bruce Cockburn remasters by Rounder: excellent and improved sound, nice notes, cool bonus tracks. The extra cuts, the neat instrumental "Cala Luna" and the fine "I Wanna Dance With You" would have fit pretty well on the original release; it's a puzzle why these tracks never were issued before. So Rounder gives us extra stuff, but makes the bizarre decision not to include both versions of the lead track, "The Trouble With Normal." Fans should note that the version heard on this remaster, though similar, is NOT the version presented on the original Gold Castle CD. For the record, the Rounder take is more interesting, probably less slick; but frankly, I like the other, more polished and propulsive track better. It's a matter of taste. But the confounding mystery is why Rounder didn't decide to include both versions! It gives us extra tracks, but completely omits the version of the title cut that most Americans know. The rest of the music is quite nice, of course, featuring interesting musical ideas and possibly Cockburn's top-to-bottom best set of lyrics. The album has aged very well, though I must say I always thought the running order was badly flawed. Too many similarly paced tracks in the last half. Still, a great reissue even though they forced me to keep my old copy so I'll still have the other version of "The Trouble With Normal."

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Cockburn, January 17, 2003
By
B. K. McNeal (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trouble With Normal (Audio CD)
It goes without saying that this album is incredible (I have at least 6 or 7 BC albums, and as long as they don't drift too far into the folk music spectrum, I have nothing but praise for them) but it is in my view one of the most 'consistent' BC albums in my collection.

There are no weak songs and everything, from The Trouble With Normal to Planet Of The Clowns, is incredible. From the trance-like rhythms of Hoop Dancer to the remarkable Going Up Against Chaos, this is an unforgettable album that for me is the most memorable album that I have yet heard from Bruce Cockburn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopeful in Many Ways, June 13, 2004
This review is from: Trouble With Normal (Audio CD)
"Let's Put Our Hearts Together" is hopeful..wonderful song..other tracks are great as well. This Canadian doesn't get the glory he deserves, I guest just too far off the normal curve of commercially accepted music. He is too often associated with the superficial "Dead Heads" of airhead Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and the like. That's too bad.
