Book Description

Taos, New Mexico was the sweetest smelling town west of Amish country. The reason was Slimy Beach, a man who had an intuitive genius for latrine digging. For payment, Slimy preferred worthless Confederate money. Yup, the people of Taos came to appreciate this smelly little man.

It's true that he liked to tell long boring stories, but everyone has their faults.

Oh, and he killed people... Well, every town needs a gunfighter. They cut down on the riff-raff like swindlers, card cheats... and bankers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story--even if you're not a Western fan June 22, 2013

I don't usually read Westerns, but I read this book and enjoyed every word. It's written with humor as dry as the New Mexico climate. It's the story of Slimy Beach, an unlikely gunfighter whose day job is digging holes for outhouses, and is told by his extremely long-lived best friend many years after Slimy's demise. He's not a glamorous hero, despite the juxtaposition of this story against a romantic dime-novel version of Slimy's life. It's a very quick, entertaining read. Perfect as a beach book--preferably not a slimy beach, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun (and funny) short read November 27, 2013

This fun, quick read is filled with chuckle-out-loud moments; the prologue's irreverence was just the start of my smiles. The story itself (an outhouse digger-turned-gunslinger) is funny enough, but the author has a great sense of first-person narration, and it was the narrator's asides that had me laughing more often than not. But there's also a certain poignancy to the book, as the narrator reflects on his life--and town--sixty years ago. By the end, I was sorry to see the characters go, and I will definitely be re-reading it!
