Book Description

Inheriting the most notorious house of ill repute in Texas can spell trouble for a girl's reputation . . . especially when she's Elizabeth Murphy, Bramble's prim and proper librarian. Yet when she discovers a buck-naked cowboy handcuffed to a four-poster bed, she forgets all about the town gossips. Elizabeth has sworn off men, but the stranger's kisses melt her resolve faster than ice cream on a hot summer day.
Waking up in Miss Hattie's Henhouse isn't how Brant Cates reckoned on getting to the bottom of his great-granddaddy's murder. The plan was to solve the centuries-old crime, then get the heck out of Dodge. But after meeting Elizabeth and discovering that the buttoned-up beauty is a sexy siren in disguise, he just can't pull himself away.
Now Brant needs Elizabeth to finally put his past to rest, but is she willing to risk her future on Bramble's newest bad boy?

About the Author

Katie Lane's interest in romance was sparked in high school in the backseat of a '65 Mustang-okay, so maybe it wasn't romance as much as raging teenage hormones. Still, coupled with a wild imagination, those make-out sessions inspired many a steamy storyline along with a strong belief that true love does prevail. Katie lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the owner of that Mustang and would love to hear from her readers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Trouble In Texas - an OK read December 31, 2012
By Jess
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Brant is on his way to his brother's wedding when he stops off at Miss Hattie's Henhouse hoping to learn the truth about his great-grandfather's murder. He ends up shot, drugged and handcuffed to a bed, held by three old women, or hens as they liked to be called. The actual owner of the house, Elizabeth, shows up there to warn the women that she's planning to sell their home when she finds Brant. Since he's still high on whatever drug the old hens gave him, he thinks Elizabeth is the legendary Miss Hattie and things get a little hot and heavy in the bedroom. Elizabeth stops things before they go any farther and it's the start of a crazy relationship between Brant and Elizabeth and of course the crazy women who live at the Henhouse.

The story centers around the hens wanting to rebuild Miss Hattie's Henhouse to its former glory. Ok, not it's full former glory, nothing illegal going on there now, but when Brant's brother Beau shows up, he loves hanging out at the house and thinks turning into a mens retreat would equal a huge success. Brant gets on board and they start renovations, at the same time, Brant and now Elizabeth are still trying to find clues amongst all the home's history as to what really happened to Brant's relative. Along the way, Brant and Elizabeth start to move into a `friends with benefits' relationship. Which wouldn't be a huge deal, but Elizabeth is a librarian in her late-30s, never married and has never had sex. Brant is hesitant at first, but gives into their attraction. He doesn't want to get close to Elizabeth, he doesn't want to get close to anyone, because he's still dealing with the loss of his wife and son and he's had to watch Beau fight cancer.

Elizabeth Murphy, the calm, collected, town librarian has no idea how she wound up owning the most dilapidated piece of real estate in Texas but she had. The other fact that completely rocks her steady boat was that this mess used to be a house of ill repute, seriously. Right now the biggest question for her is who the handsome man handcuffed to the largest bed she has ever seen. Branston Cates has a few questions of his own and wants answers now before he explodes from all this nonsense. He is not happy about any of the last 24 hours events and cannot figure out what his attraction to Elizabeth would be, she dresses like an old woman.

Brant came to Bramble, Texas to unravel history and enact a little revenge, not get tangled up with some crazy old women who thought they were still young and spry. He never intended to give anyone a second glance but that was before Elizabeth stepped into his line of sight and every other object became out of focus. She is not his type, nor did she really have any sense of style but something about her made him wonder what was under that frumpy suit and is she seriously still untouched at her age.

Elizabeth and Brant seem to do nothing but fight, well when they are not kissing, but coming to a truce and realizing the potential value of restoring the home seems to smooth out the wrinkles. Brant's brother is also there to help light the way but Brant is determined that he is cursed and walking away might be a better idea even though something he cannot identify is holding him back. When secrets are revealed and problems with no resolution appear who will stay and fight and you will run?

Katie Lane writes books that are hotter than Texas in July and every reader always prays that they will keep on coming.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read February 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Lots of fun and games, enticing intrigues with tidbits of wisdom here and there make Trouble In Texas a tantalizing tale. One needs to be willing to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the humor, the fun, and eccentricities of the characters.

The title "cowboy" is bantered about rather loosely and some of the characters are stereotyped, but their actions pull the reader into the tangles of the past, troubles in the present, and plans for the future. Just about every character is on a mission of one kind or the other with few in agreement about desired outcomes.

When thirty-seven year old Elizabeth Murphy, librarian in Bramble, Texas inherits Miss Hattie's Henhouse, a dilapidated place that was once the infamous Texas bordello, her life takes a hundred and eighty degree turn. She doesn't intend for it to but the "hens" in the house are masters (or mistresses) of seduction in their own unique way. They do know how to manipulate! By the time Minnie, Baby, Sunshine, and even Starlet work their wiles, not only Elizabeth but also Brandston Cates, a man who feels cursed and wants answers, are seduced.

If you've read previous books in the series, you will recognize many of the secondary characters, but Trouble In Texas stands alone very well. It is about two people who need love so very much. How a man afraid to love because of a curse he believes in and a no-nonsense spinster get together to enjoy sizzling sex, feel a soul mate connection, and survive the meddling of the citizens of Bramble, Texas makes delightful reading.

The reader gets to enjoy both subtle and blatant humor, the unraveling of a-more-than-century old secret, and the many types of love--family, man/woman, friends.

More About the Author

Katie Lane's love for writing started in fifth grade when her teacher had her write a short story using the point of view of an inanimate object. Katie chose a large skirt that was owned by a skinny woman--which, of course, resulted in some underwear showing. When the entire class laughed at her tale, Katie was hooked. She spent the rest of her childhood writing down her humorous stories in spiral notebooks. But then came high school, and her writing took a backseat to hormones and boys--or one particular boy. It wasn't until after she was married and her two exceptional daughters were grown that she returned to writing and, eventually, achieved her dream of becoming a published author.

Katie Lane is the USA Today bestselling author of the Deep in the Heart of Texas and Hunk for the Holiday series. Katie lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and when she isn't writing, enjoys reading, going to the gym, golfing, traveling, or just snuggling next to her high school sweetheart and cairn terrier Roo. Katie loves to hear from her readers and can be found at, Twitter @ktlane3, and
