Book Description

February 1, 2008
Lois McMillen was 34 years old when her body was found January 15, 2000 along the shore on the British Virgin Island of Tortola. She and her parents had been visiting their vacation home there when four men flew to the island on holiday. She knew several of them and had partied with them there prior to her drowning death. Michael Spicer, Evan George, Alexander Benedetto and William Labrador were arrested for her murder. There was little evidence to link them to her death when career con-man Jeffrey Plante, already imprisoned, claimed that William Labrador confessed to drowning her. A long and arduous trial ensued in Tortola pitting the word of Plante against Labrador. Who was telling the truth about the murder of Lois McMillen - Jeffrey Plante or William Labrador? And, what would the defendant's mother say to a key witness moments before attending her son's murder trial? Was it only her words or something more that would dissuade her from testifying? Plante had never recanted his story and veered little from his version of what happened that night. And, the suggestion that a 'hit' had been placed on his life before the trial began added further confusion and the possibility that Labrador might have something to hide. Or, was that just an example of a bad cop seeking extortion money? William Labrador was portrayed as a victim of Plante's convoluted and opportunistic lies. I thought so as well. In an effort to help another victim of Jeffrey Plante, this witness stepped onto the island that lived up to its motto and discovered more than "Nature's Little Secret." This is a personal account of my knowledge of the prison snitch, the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment and my involvement as a witness in the murder trial.

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of money, January 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Trouble in Tortola (Paperback)
Don't waste your money buying this book. First of all, it was difficult getting into the content because of the lack of good editing, especially the punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure. The editor did not know when to add commas, hyphens, or apostrophes. The paragraphs lacked order. I kept wanting to rearrange the sentences, deleting so much that was repetitive. The author constantly used the word "however" to the point that I finally took out a red pen and started underlining the word whenever I found it. This is how distracting a poorly written piece of writing can be. Yet, I continued reading. It is a rather sad tale about a woman who falls under the spell of a con man. The story is one of self-pity, denial, an abuse all in the name of love. Not only were the actions of her boyfriend/lover/husband disgusting, her behavior and actions were at times equally disturbing. How could a woman with any dignity find it loving that a man refuses to use the bathroom in a fancy restaurant preferring to pee in a cup and leave it there just so that he can be with her? She continues her pathetic tale by describing that she also found it funny and wondered what the person's reaction would be who had to clean up the mess. The more I read, the more I felt no pity for this well-educated woman. The only positive thing I can say is that it is a cautionary tale to desperate women about falling for the wrong kind of man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Summer Read, June 30, 2009
By
This review is from: Trouble in Tortola (Paperback)
I could not put The book down. Trouble in Tortola is a story about seeking the truth, who really killed Lois McMillen? The story takes place on a island filled with the most amazing sunsets along with a mystery. Channon Lytton tells the story as if it happened just yesterday. The ending gave me chills. It's summer must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read!, April 4, 2008
This review is from: Trouble in Tortola (Paperback)
Loved it! I chose this book at first because of the cover! It looked like a great beach-read because of the tropical setting, and turned out to be an unbelievable story! Although not an 'avid' reader, I finished this book in a few days - just couldn't put it down! The author did a fantastic job of describing the scenery and characters, and I truly felt that I was actually part of the saga! I even searched the web for more info on the trials when I had completed it, and looked for pics of the people too! It turned out to be the PERFECT beach read!
