Marco Beltrami has become probably one of the most versatile composers out there. He absolutely blew me away with The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada, and then floored me with 3:10 To Yuma. His score to The Hurt Locker with Buck Sanders was so perfect for the character and the story as well. With The Woman In Black he delivered as close to a perfect horror score as you can get. With Trouble With The Curve we see a side of Marco Beltrami we don't see much of. While he is able to craft intimate character studies in any genre, it's here with this drama that his music breathes a slow and soaking existence.

The central motif isn't anything fancy, but it gives the music a grounding identity. The guitar becomes the solo instrument that not only gives it a hometown rural vibe, but a human element to the entire score. The score builds character by giving us small moments of growth. There are a lot of short tracks on the score and the 40 minute running time is on the short side, but the depth is all there in full. You feel the score as it plays out, and that' s something that Marco Beltrami has really been able to accomplish in every score he does. This isn't a typical overcoming adversity to triumph type of sports movie. It's about an ailing baseball recruiter who can't see so well anymore that his daughter joins him on what may be his last recruiting trip. The warmth of the score grows as we progress and that's where the true strength of the music comes from, the warmth.

You get the sensation of "don't give up" from this score. Not in the cheesy way of "follow your dreams", but in the way of "if the world makes you feel like you've struck out then who the hell cares". Marco Beltrami does a lot with a little in this score, and in the smallness of the music comes big emotions. Character is ever present in the music, and that's what makes the experience a rewarding one. It's a great listen and should be on the playlist of anyone looking for a deep score with strong character.

Usually I love all of Clint Eastwoods music - this was very disappointing. I will return it if possible. Sorry!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but... January 5, 2013
Format:MP3 Music
Why does On My Way have to be album only? It's a fantastic song, but I may as well just go to iTunes where I can buy it by itself. Not to say that the soundtrack isn't good, because I actually really enjoyed the score. But I'm not all that interested in just buying scores. Would also be cool if it not only had On My Way, but some of the other songs with lyrics from the film.
