Editorial Reviews

Listening to tunes and album ideas in the Rubberfunk record library during a summer afternoon tea & biscuits break, led to one of those "wouldn't it be great if.." type conversations; "wouldn't it be great if we could get Roachford on vocals". A few quick emails later and "Trouble Woman" was born. Teaming up with brit-soul royalty Roachford, Dr Rubberfunk presents a cautionary tale and a lesson in low slung soul all in one. Andrew Roachford has been on the UK music scene for over two decades - his work from the 80's and 90's made him Columbia's biggest selling UK act for ten years with a seven album recording deal. Remixes come from New York legend Steinski, while following in true block rocking style is Featurecast with a tearing D&B mix. Steve "Steinski" Stein achieved notoriety in the early 1980's, alongside Doug "Double Dee" DiFranco, for a series of underground hip-hop sample-based collages known as "The Lessons". Whilst they never had a hit record, they became highly influential for subsequent artists, with the likes of Coldcut, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and The Avalanches all citing the duo as favourites. To complement Steinski's enigmatic edit, South coast beat hero Featurecast drops in on side two. Although his mix might come as a bit of a surprise to the D&B heads it certainly won't be to fans of the funky break who know what Featurecast is capable of delivering - whatever genre he is working in.
