Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When three young female New York editors come up with a sassy scheme to publicly expose a notoriously womanizing literary agent, little do they imagine he'll end up not just naked (and tied up in S/M gear) but dead. All do, however, have motives for murder: the smarmy fellow has personally humiliated successful Felicia Redmon, professionally backstabbed not-so-successful Tallie Blankenship and plagiarized the plot of a book that means the world to ambitious Jan Glass. So confessing that they were the last to see their tormentor alive is likely to make them prime suspects, even in the eyes of Tallie's protective new cop boyfriend. But if they stay silent, they may wind up being the real murderer's next victims. While whodunit isn't revealed till the book's surprise ending, the suspense isn't the kind that kills you. As is typical of Bond's books (Party Crashers, etc.), the overall tone is deliciously frothy, and small comedic details abound: high-powered Felicia is a secret super housewife who cleans, cooks and lies about it, and Jan has changed her name from plain "Jane" to appear more glamorously French. And though romance is not the book's main focus, there's enough love between the laughs to keep relationship-minded readers happy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Mystery With Plenty of Action April 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you do like I am doing and reading Ms Bonds books back to back, you'll start noticing certain similarities between her books. Normally I would be livid about that, but Ms Bonds manages to make just different enough so that we can still feel like we are reading something fresh and new. A lot of romance/mystery writers stick with a formula that works for them and that is alright by me, since I know I will love the book.

These books are more about the mystery and the women's friendships than they are about the romance and I am really liking this change. (at least for me it is a change)

Set in the world of publishing and the early world of e-books, this will make for an interesting read for anyone who...well...reads! Two friends and one woman who may or may not be a friend are all taken advantage of by an agent, they decide to scheme and find a way to publicly humiliate him. Except that the humiliation turns to murder and implicates these three women.

The book deals with eccentric authors, randy authors and authors who plagiarize. While I usually have a good idea of who dun-it and why by the time I get to 75% of the book...this time the ending was somewhat silly and totally unexpected, yet introduced a cleaver twist.

WE do get our HEA's for at least one and perhaps two of the women, The characters are likeable (at least the one's we are supposed to like) and the characters we should dislike, well Ms Bond does a very good job of that. The sex is a bit descriptive but no in the realm of erotica and if encounters make you uncomfortable then it will be easy to scan right by the one scene.

I loved the background of New York City in January and the narrative was wonderful. Ms Bond really writes 'real' characters, ones that you swear you know already and barring that ones that you would love to get to know and be friends with.

A fun, light mystery, with lots of action and with something for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and complelling! October 29, 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'm usually a 5 to 10-pages a night reader, but on this book I read more than 100 pages each night and had to force myself to turn off the light. This was an extremely well crafted mystery. The dual heroines were likeable; there was a nice romance; and the intrigue never let up. You can bet I'll be reading more of Stephanie Bond's romantic suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT story with lots of action. October 20, 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I really loved the two main characters for this book. I was sad to put it down. It really flew along and had a wonderful suspenseful storyline. I immediately began looking for more books by Stephanie Bond since this was the first one I read. I hope they are all as wonderful as this one.

More About the Author

Stephanie Bond was several years into a corporate computer programming career when an instructor in her night school MBA program remarked that she had a flair for writing and encouraged her to submit one of her projects to academic journals. "But," Stephanie says, "all I could think was 'I wonder if I could write a romance novel?'" Bond grew up on a farm in eastern Kentucky where the entertainment choices were few. Luckily, she had a beloved aunt who shared her passion for reading. "When she visited once a year, she brought boxes and boxes of books by Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney and lush historicals--I was in heaven! I think I learned most of what I know about world history from historical romance novels. So suddenly thinking about writing in the genre of the books I loved so much was very exciting." After writing every spare moment for two years, Stephanie sold her first romantic comedy manuscript, IRRESISTIBLE? to Harlequin books. Two years later, she walked away from her corporate career to write commercial fiction full time. To date, she's published over 60 romance and mystery projects with Random House, St. Martin's Press, HarperCollins, and Mira Books, and is most well-known for her BODY MOVERS humorous mystery series. Look for Stephanie's new mystery series TWO GUYS DETECTIVE AGENCY coming May 2013. (TWO GUYS DETECTIVE AGENCY has been optioned for TV series development!) Stephanie lives in midtown Atlanta and is probably working on a story at this very moment.
