4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable on its own merits
One of the things about the Love & Rockets universe is the intricate manner that every story is more or less related to the other stories. One character from a story will show up in a tangential way in another one and then another one will refer back to the rest of the series. This particular book is a movie starring the sister of Luba from the series about the small town...

3.0 out of 5 stars Eh. Was so-so.
This was a super short read. I enjoy most Love and Rockets stuff but this just didn't seem to do it for me. The story just never seemed to go anywhere and didn't provide much humor. Wasn't horrible, but definitely wasn't the best I've seen from Gilbert Hernandez.

One of the things about the Love & Rockets universe is the intricate manner that every story is more or less related to the other stories. One character from a story will show up in a tangential way in another one and then another one will refer back to the rest of the series. This particular book is a movie starring the sister of Luba from the series about the small town in Mexico where time has more or less stopped. Only this movie is "based on" the "true" story from Speak of the Devil which is a much more straightforward storyline about a peeping tom (or peeping jane) who becomes part of a crime spree.

Got that?

Well it doesn't matter. If you read the Luba stories or the Speak of the Devil book then you can see the way the books are in negotiation with each other with this one as the "official Hollywood" version and the other one as the real one. Anyhow, it might be best to read this one on its own. The three characters in this book are messy and backstabbing and yet strangely endearing. They steal money and rely on each other when they know that they are untrustworthy. This is a fine noir thriller that should keep you reading for an afternoon.
