Book Description

October 1994
While most of us fly-fish to escape from daily life, for John Gierach and his friends fly-fishing IS a way of life. They are trout bums. But John Gierach is also an exceptional writer. The essays in Trout Bum are reflective, bitingly humorous and enormously wise in the ways of fishing and men. In vivid, unforgettable detail they recount the emotional, spiritual and tangible adventures and pleasures of stalking trout in and around the Rockies -- day in, day out, from season to season, with friends and alone. John Gierach's essays join the literary tradition of angling classics like The River Why, and A River Runs Through It.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Gierach's previous book and articles (four of which are included here) have been well received by the fishing fraternity. The present effort is a collection of 20 pieces marked by Gierach's inimitable, intelligent style. Not purely philosophical, adventurous, or instructional, the book combines elements of all three with a dash of wit to boot. Gierach belongs in every good collection of contemporary fly fishing literature; he is the common man, uncommonly attuned to the nuances of his vocation, turned articulate author. David J. Review

Thomas McGuane Trout Bum captures the passion, confusion and left-handed poetry of modern fishing, having his heart to the rivers he fishes, John Gierach conveys the power of his experience without pretense.

John Nichols author of The Milagro Beanfield War, The Magic Journey, and American Blood Trout Bum is one of those delightful funds, like Norman McLean's A River Runs Through It. John Gierach is simply one of the more wonderful outdoor writers to come down the pike in many a season. I laughed out loud on almost every page, and found much of what he has to say very lyrical and touching. This book is a treasure trove of fishy witticisms, outright belly laughs, and enough technical lore and love of nature to keep the most avid (or even the least avid) outdoors person turning pages relentlessly.

Gierach obviously loves deeply and cares for this world he has chosen to make his stand in. It's a beautiful book, humorous, sly, rich, and touching. Once you read the first page, you'll be hooked...and love every minute of it...I promise!

Rod & Reel A brilliant collection of narrative essays about flies, fly rods, float tubes, and just plain fishing. Trout Bum will be a classic of angling literature, not because it adheres to an ancient model, but because it updates a tradition....The way Gierach tells a story is an act of pure generosity....

Rocky Mountain Streamside If you enjoy incisive comment, wry humor, and some inventive insight into trout and trout anglers, then Trout Bum is just the book for you...this is highly intelligent stuff indeed, but it is masterfully tempered by Gierach's polished and congenial style. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goes great with an ice cold beer., November 11, 2007
This review is from: Trout Bum (Hardcover)
Careful with this light-hearted little collection of essays, there is wisdom sprinkled in there and you just might learn something that will improve your fishing. Gierach is well loved and well read by fly fisherman and for good reason. You sense a little of his philosophy background in his belief that simple is generally better, and his writing is without the pretentiousness that one often finds in fly fishing literature. This is THE book for the guy who fishes in jeans and a t-shirt. All you high-brows with the top shelf gear, 15 retractables on your vest, and perpetually upturned noses will still enjoy it, but I like to think of it as a diamond FOR the rough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic for Fly Anglers, September 26, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Trout Bum (Hardcover)
John Gierach is to fly fishing what Will Rogers was to social commentary. It's the common human experience of anticipation, joy, anger, humor, camaraderie, disappointment and resilience we can easily relate to in John's elegant stories. If you are a fly fisher then the tales are just that much better. You will read the twenty chapters of this book and immediately want to go back and enjoy your favorites again. Yes, it's that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gierach is the best, April 3, 2007

This review is from: Trout Bum (Paperback)
Every fly fisherman has his favorite writers. It's a necessity, because it's so much easier to find time to read than it is to find time to fish. Gierach is wonderful. I've read most of his books. I like Bill Tapply too.
