Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A veteran science-book writer introduces the idea of the food chain in this attractive picture book. Sayre unfurls the process behind the intriguing title in a very simple text, explaining how leaves that fall from trees into a stream decompose to become food for aquatic creatures, which are eaten by trout, which eventually become a picnic meal for a man and three inquisitive children—who have observed the whole process and recorded findings in  science notebooks. Athough the time frame and Sayre’s reference to bears at the close of the book (“Trout are made of trees, / So are the bears”) are likely to require further explanation, kids will still get a sense of the interconnectedness of nature. Endle’s collages are exceptional. Her minimalist figures (each with a similar round, smooth face and tiny dot eyes) are juxtaposed very effectively against crisp yet intricate, layered backgrounds of painted-and- patterned cut-papers. Nature remains the focus of each spread, but people appear in most, investigating what’s happening—and enjoying every discovery they make. Grades K-2. --Stephanie Zvirin --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Trout Are Made Of Trees", May 29, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This book is a lovely combination of brief informative text and colorful illustrations. The author uses simple declarative sentences to describe the natural process of decomposition of a leaf that falls into the river, is broken down by bacteria, and its passage from one form of life to the next until it ends up nourishing a trout. The provocative opening line reads, "Trout are made of trees." The first mixed-media collage illustration shows two children as they gaze at a trout swimming in a river that is framed by a beautiful landscape of trees, bushes and leaves. A double spread shows the children collecting and examining leaves, one holds a magnifying glass, the other a container with a sample of algae. The author thoughtfully includes in an addendum a description of the life cycle of a trout, some suggestions for readers on how to help protect a stream habitat, and a list of resources, both books and web sites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally Good, March 24, 2011
This review is from: Trout Are Made of Trees (Paperback)
The information is solid and access accessible. The artwork is overall good and well-suited to the story. However, I can't get past the weird-looking children. Why mess up an otherwise great book (story and illustrations) with football-shaped heads?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story that introduces stream ecology to little ones., December 25, 2010

Science nerds unite! I love this book because it doesn't dumb down the ecological connection between the land and water for little minds. The graphics are spot on, and concepts engage my 3 year old to think about what is happening under the water. Highly recommended.
