5.0 out of 5 stars TroyBuilt is a great saw
Bought this TroyBuilt used. Recently, we had a wet heavy snow and a lot of trees fell in the neighborhood. The neighbor's crabapple tree was mostly in my back yard so I asked if he had a chain saw. A few hours, he came back with a TroyBuilt chain saw and I cut up most of the tree branchs. He offered me the saw for $40.00 since it was running rough, I took it to a...

1.0 out of 5 stars very poor product
I have owned this chain saw for a while now. I bought it to clean up after a storm and while it lasted, it performed as expected. I am not a heavy user of chain saws and this saw had less than 50 hours use when the engine melted down this last weekend. Very disappointed, I thought troybilt had a reputation for quality. He offered me the saw for $40.00 since it was running rough, I took it to a small engine shop for an overhaul. Cost me $67 for the rebuilt carb and a new chain.

The manual says MDT and the parts list says McCalloch. So it might be a party to corporate buyouts. Anyways, after filling the tank with gas/oil mix and chain lube, a 4 push prime and 4 pulls to get the gas mixture through the carb. A second 4 pulls got the engine started and idle for about 20 seconds.

Cut the branch to 12" rounds and hopefully, next fall, we'll have a nice fire in the fireplace.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not actually a Troy-bilt, August 8, 2010

I bought this at Lowe's thinking I was getting a quality machine that was made in Wisconsin .
I never paid attention to the small writing on the label until the thing fell apart in less than 2 months. Oiler broke, enginge would die after about 2 minutes at a time. Then finaly would never start again

This is not a Troy-Bilt but a cheap China made product that is the exact same saw as the McCulloch that was selling for $100.00 less. Just red instead of yellow

In today's market brand name no longer matters because there are companies like Troy-Bilt trying to deceive you into thinking you are buying a better product because of thier name.

I wound up buying an American made Poulan pro 20" It is a pleasure to run and can cut a cord of wood without even adjusting the blade.

I dont like being tricked and will avoid Troy-Bilt products forever

1.0 out of 5 stars Can't find a REPAIR manual, November 20, 2008
This review is from: Troy-Bilt TB4218CC 42cc 2-cycle Gas Engine 18" Chain Saw (Lawn & Patio)
I needed a mid-sized saw for smaller things around my place. This Troy Bilt got really, really great reviews. I bought it. Now after using it for less than 50 hours, the chain oiler is 'melted' and of course no oil on the chain - can't use saw. It starts GREAT! - no doubt about the Spring Assist it is a real asset.
My problem is that I took it to a repair shop. Normally, I do all my repairs myself, but I had a bunch of other things on the bench already. This repair shop is supposed to do all makes and models. Well, I get a call and they tell me that they can't get parts for it and therefore can't repair it. Did I want them to toss it for me? I said no, of course and in 5 minutes I had downloaded a parts manual and ordered the parts.
MY PROBLEM IS: nobody seems to have a REPAIR manual for the DIYers.
First I'm annoyed that it went bad after such a short usage and now I can't find a manual. I've wasted time looking. I probably don't really need the manual, I can fix most anything - but its just the idea of not being able to find one.
So if anybody has a repair manual they want to share, I'll have it.
I think it is probably a decent homeowners saw that gets ordinary use. I'll stay with Stihl from now on. I have a big model made by them. They are tight with parts and manual too. Only dealers can get you parts.
Troy Bilt, MTD, Craftsman and gosh knows who else are all made by the same Asia company anyway. I can't stand it anymore!

3.0 out of 5 stars If size matters, beware..., April 2, 2008

The saw was reasonably priced and has worked fine for me through one season of wood gathering. And I have been able to find replacement parts (bar & chain) easily. The only issue I have is with the way it is advertised. You can not actually cut 18" of wood with it in one whack. The exposed cutting bar is just shy of 16". (Does anyone remember the days of computer CRTS, where you would get an 18" monitor, but only 15.9" was viewable. That is this product.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Supplier failure to deliver either product or explanation, February 8, 2006

The Amazon supplier of this product acording to Amazon customer service was not the manufacturer (MTD). I ordered this product for a Christmas gift on December 8th and have received no meaningful explanation for "no delivery" as of this date 2/8/06. I called the manufacturer and was told there were no production problems on this new model. I get a weekly computer generated message from Amazon telling me that the anticipated delivery date is one more week.... one more week... one more week. After 10+ of such emails I get the distinct impression the supplier is unable to fulfill its obligations and should be removed from this sight, lacking either the desire or capicaty to deliver on its advertised 1-2 week delivery dates.

I hesitate to order a different make or model thru Amzon for fear that ordering another chainsaw will result in additional business for the same unknown supplier who is unable to deliver either the product or plausable explanation for failure.

I purchased this item on 1/14/06 and have received several postponement messages as well. No explanation why. Just that Amazon wanted to let me know that there is a delay with some items in the order I placed. There was also an apology for any inconvenience, and a link to bail out of the order. There is now a delivery estimate of April 17, 2006 - May 5, 2006. I should have purchased this elsewhere. It's time for Amazon.com to pressure this supplier into making good on their offers.
