easiest-to-apply of the all-natural sunscreens; great for kids,
By Mari Hall "Mari" (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: TruKid Sunny Days SPF 30 3.5 oz (Misc.)
We've always bought the all-natural sunscreens with physical sunblock ingredients (zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide), and no artificial fragrances or unnecessary chemicals -- e.g., Badger sunscreen, California Baby, UV Natural, etc. The downside of these sunscreens is that they generally tend to be very thick, fairly oily, and difficult to spread -- in some cases almost like a paste. (The one exception was the Weleda sunscreen, which had a beautiful texture and was nice for faces, but didn't seem to last as long.) The Trukids is the first all-natural sunscreen we've found that offers serious protection and is genuinely easy to spread. It is somewhat liquidy, spreads quickly even on an impatient child, absorbs easily, and is not greasy. The scent is mild and pleasant (sort of a natural creamsicle scent). It also contains micronized minerals (as opposed to nanoparticles), for those who are concerned about the possible risks associated with nanoparticles.

We LOVE this stuff!,

This review is from: TruKid Sunny Days SPF 30 3.5 oz (Misc.)
Our family truly loves this stuff. I think we have tried just about everything out there. Others were either too sticky, too white, too pasty, way too expensive, or had an "iffy" formula. This formula spreads wonderfully and does not leave a sticky or unattractive film. It also smells wonderful. My 3-year-old has FINALLY stopped complaining about sunblock. We will definitely continue to use TruKid!

Finally, a healthy sunscreen I LOVE!,
This review is from: TruKid Sunny Days SPF 30 3.5 oz (Misc.)
We live in Florida and are outside a LOT. Prior to this month, I have HATED and rebelled against using sunscreen, because I won't use chemicals on my skin, but I have HATED every natural/mineral sunscreen I had tried. It seems everyone else who has reviewed other mineral sunscreens and said they didn't look white - HAVE SUPER WHITE SKIN!!! They were fair complected and freckled! Of course they didn't see the white film! But put those sunscreens on an olive or dark complexion and it's ghastly!!! This past week I ordered 4 new ones for the approaching summer and it seems I have hit the jackpot! Sunday I tried 2 new products before a long bike event. Trukid sunscreen went on easily and rubbed in well. The scent is a light and pleasant citrus, not offensive or perfumey even for my husband. THERE WAS NO WHITE/PURPLE FILM ON MY BODY ALL DAY. I can't believe it. And, after 4 hours in the Florida sun, no burn, and not even an annoying tan line where the bike jersey/shorts were. I'm sold!
I experimented with one side of me protected by Trukid, and the other side protected by Mychelle spf28. I have to say, the results were the exact same on both sides. Wow! 2 winners! I have purchased 2 others: BurnOut and Badger. So... more experimenting ahead. But I'm already very satisfied with these 2 products and will highly promote them.

Best of all I've tried,

This is my favorite sunscreen. It works at least as good/if not better as any others I've tried, nice orange-like scent, not oily, not excessively thick, effectiveness is immediate. - added bonus the company uses biodegradable packing noodles (dissolve under water) and ships quickly for reasonable cost. I live in Hawaii and paid less than $5 to ship three tubes of it. It got here in less than a week.
In my search to find the best "healthy" sunscreen I have tried several and will summarize them in case anyone else is shopping around for the perfect sunscreen/sun protection. I have learned a lot thru trial and error and will share that in the case that it may help save others the "error" part. The rest of this review is mostly about sunscreen in general or for those looking for extra info. Sunscreens I've tried: Badger - works ok but very oily, has to be applied 30 min prior to exposure Loving Naturals - works ok but VERY VERY oily, also has to be applied 30 mins prior. This is especially a problem if you apply it to children 30 min before leaving the house. I don't want my kids running around the house leaving oily sunscreen residue all over the furniture, etc. CA Baby - the is my 2nd favorite sunscreen. It works pretty good and is not oily like the above mentioned. However, it too needs to be applied 30 min prior. It is fairly thick and takes some effort to rub in, however I personally don't mind this. On the up side, sometimes you can find this locally (Target usually carries it in the summertime). Coppertone Water Babies Pure and Simple - this works ok, my biggest gripe about this is that (unlike the above mentioned) this sunscreen rates a "3/moderate health risk" with the EWG. No point in taking a larger risk than you need to. This sunscreen also seems to irritate one of my children's skin. The only reason I would buy this is if I was in a pinch and had to buy something from a local store and this was the best they had. Out of all the sunscreens I've mentioned this one is the easiest to find in stores. Here is the EWG's website for more info on their ratings... [...] Furthermore, it is critical that you follow the directions and apply the sunscreen up to 30 min in advance if stated. I have found lesser effectiveness when I have tried cutting corners to get outside sooner. Your skin needs to stay cool during this time or you will just sweat it off. Reapplication is also critical, and I have found that even with drying off and spending some time in the shade to allow the second coat to soak in it still doesn't work as good as the first application. We live in Hawaii where the sun is strong year round. I have found that one of the best things I can do to protect my young children is to keep them indoors or in the shade during the hottest part of the day. In addition to that my children always wear rash guards at the pool/beach, and I don't allow them to wear sleeveless shirts/dresses on days when they will be outside much. I like Coolibar" clothing for infants. Keep in mind that infants should be kept in the shade when possible and even then it is possible for them to get some sun on their delicate skin. I keep my 9 month old at home when I can, but when we go out to the pool/beach as a family I put her in protective clothing and apply sunscreen to her face and feet even when she is in the shade (she puts her hands in her mouth so much I usually don't do her hands). In short, Sunny Days is the best sunscreen I've tried and I use it all the time. However, sunscreen should not be your only line of defense. Clothing, shade and a little common sense should also come into play. Hope this helps someone ~ Aloha

Finally!,

Trukid products are amazing! The sunscreen is really incredible--I've looked for quite some time to find a natural sunscreen without it going on really white--this is it! It rubs in really well, feels great, and smells great! I only wish they had a waterproof version so I didn't have to use something else when my kiddo goes swimming. Their other products are excellent as well--we love the lotion--nice and thick and creamy, smells great too. The shampoo is also fab--wish there was a conditioner though and a swimming shampoo--because I'd love all our products to be Trukid. But we'll take what we can get! The Hero Stick rocks as well--I swear, when my son gets a scrape or has a red nose, we put this on there and it's gone in a day or two--heals and feels nice. Great products, you can't go wrong. The only other thing I would hope for in the future is more array of scents and unscented products. Also, I should mention that the customer service is quick and great!

Lotion leaves skin dry and rough,

Quite a few of my family members have found melanomas recently so this has made me quite cautious when going out in the sun. Based on EWG's 2010 sunscreen guide and all the glowing positive reviews on Amazon I decided to give this product a try. Especially appealing was the fact that this formula doesn't contain Vitamin A, which has recently been linked with the development of cancer. In the past I have used Blue Lizard Sunscreen Sensitive chemical frr, Fragrance free, SPF 30+, 3fl.oz but have been always on the lookout for better sunscreens.
I tried out this sunscreen with my family when we went to the river. I made sure all the kids and adults applied this sunscreen. First of all I was surprised when applying the cream. Although we tried and tried we couldn't get the cream to rub all the way into the skin, most of us were left with white splotchy arm, faces, and legs. Even though it doesn't seem as thick as other creams, we had trouble making it disappear. After about 80 minutes in the river we got out of the sun and most of us were fine but one of the kids did get burned. This was strange as she wasn't in the sun any more than the rest of us and had used the same amount of lotion. Another problem with this cream is how it leaves your skin feeling afterwards. In the shower the sunscreen was hard to rub off, which is a plus for protection, but is also has left both my wife and I with very dry skin. I've never experienced this with other sunscreens. I found Blue Lizard to rub in better and not dry up my skin. I wouldn't recommend this over other available products. After I've used this up I will try other brands.

Good Natural Sunscreen,
By Holly Golightly (Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: TruKid Sunny Days SPF 30 3.5 oz (Misc.)
Trukid is one of the relatively few bonafide "Natural" sunscreens available. I love the fact that I can protect my son without covering him with chemicals. Of the natural sunscreens that I have tried, Trukid has the best scent, fresh and citrusy - instead of the rancid-like smell of some of the others. I like also that it doesn't give my son's skin a bluish cast, which yet another natural sunscreen had done.
The one thing I found, however, is that it can be a little difficult to spread. While it's not pasty like some, it seems a little sticky, just enough to make it harder to distribute evenly. I know others think it spreads great, but this has been my experience with it. Despite this one small issue, though, Trukid is still a great natural sunscreen, and the one I prefer to put on my baby.

not what i expected,

This review is from: TruKid Sunny Days SPF 30 3.5 oz (Misc.)
i chose this sunscreen based on it's very high rating on the environmental working group (ewg dot org) website.
true to other reviews written on amazon, this sunscreen does have a very pleasant smell. however, it still let a significant level of "white residue" on my body and face. furthermore, the bottle was FAR too large for the amount of sunscreen inside. i felt like i was being ripped off with the bottle arriving only 1/3 full to start.

TruKid updated their formulation to exclude phenoxyethanol. When I ordered this item, the product description included an ingredient list that did not have the phenoxyethanol. However, the product I received did include it. Just something to be aware of if you don't want this ingredient and were looking for the new formulation.

Best Natural Sun Block Available,
By
This review is from: TruKid Sunny Days SPF 30 3.5 oz (Misc.)
I have used this sun block for 3 years now for daughter (now 4), my husband, and myself. I also recommended for a friend who has used it for her whole family for a couple of years(she and her son both have VERY sensative skin, and have experienced no problems). It is simply the best on the market. It works. It has a mild citrus smell that even my husband doesn't mind (it doesn't linger). It actually rubs in without leaving any white residue. It's all natural. Perfect.
