5.0 out of 5 stars This Little Piggy Stayed Home
I read "Serial" before I read "Truck Stop", as I suspect most people did since Serial was a free Kindle book. I sort of saw Serial coming as the second installment as I feverishly read Truck Stop. As I read Truck Stop I was locked onto my Kindle like Candi with an I was locked in stocks in the semi. What a terrific work of suspense blended with horror and cheese curds...

Since I am on a roll with Jack Kilborn books I went for Truck Stop- A Psycho Thriller.

Truck Stop is a short story (novella) of 15,000 words. It took me less than an hour to read it. The story was really good but, since it was short it left me wanting more.

What a terrific work of suspense blended with horror and cheese curds. Possibly the most attractive feature of Kilborne's prose is that its pictures are painted perfectly with just the right words. They are uniquely his and not a poor man's Stephen King like so many other horror writers I could name.

Instead of rehashing the whole story from beginning to end and labelling it a review, I'll say this: I greatly enjoyed the characters, the suspense and the story. Kilborne carefully plotted and planned for this. This is a terrific story and I can't wait for the third installment.

Since I am on a roll with Jack Kilborn books I went for Truck Stop- A Psycho Thriller.

Truck Stop is a short story (novella) of 15,000 words. It took me less than an hour to read it. The story was really good but, since it was short it left me wanting more.

***My advise is to save your money and put it towards Serial Uncut. Truck Stop is included in Serial Uncut along with more of the story. I read Serial Uncut and actually skipped over the Truck Stop section because I already read it. Serial Uncut will give you what you are looking for.***

Serial Uncut wraps the original Serial (Blake Crouch, Jack Kilborn, and J.A. Konrath), Bad Girl (Blake Crouch), and Truck Stop (Jack Kilborn and J.A. Konrath) all into one.

Truck Stop has gotten me interested in the Jack Daniels series by J.A. Konrath (aka Jack Kilborn). I will be headed in that direction next. Mr Konrath/Kilborn sure knows what he is doing!

Really REALLY good novella! I absolutely loved this book but its way to short Non stop suspense with graphic descriptions. If you're squeamish, don't do it. I personally couldn't put it down!

Take a deep breath before you start reading, because this baby comes at you hard and fast. J.A. Konrath's style is "lean and mean," so don't expect long, flowery descriptions.

Pull over at this TRUCK STOP for a strong cup of serial killers, hookers, and a very likeable female cop named Jack Daniels.

I read it on an airplane---which was creepy enough. Sure glad I didn't read it at a truck stop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Squeamish? Proceed with care., August 4, 2010
This review is from: Truck Stop - A Psycho Thriller (Kindle Edition)
First off I'll say this is indeed gruesome, more so than I normally read. While I lean towards hard-boiled, this falls more into the serial killer/horror category, so I may not be the best judge. I like Jack Daniels; she has her head on straight and she knows how to handle herself. The writing is vivid, though I found the dialog at points somewhat clunky, though not enough to distract. I believe, like many other reviews, it would have been enjoyable if it were longer, if my discomfort as a reader was dragged out further as I cringed. The descriptions are well done, they throw enough out there to get your imagination rolling, but not enough to put the brakes on. This leaves your mind to run wild and there were passages here that merely recalling makes my skin crawl - to that, I say "Well done!" It seemed as though the story was a bit rushed, while it was suspenseful, with more to read that suspense could have been amplified to maximum.

I had read "Afraid" and picked out this prequel to the suspenseful blood bath hoping it would be just as great. I was not disappointed. The stage is set when two psycho serial killers meet by chance at the Truck Stop and decide to have their fun with Jack, tough lady detective from Chicago. The psychos of course can not trust each other (lots of fun watching them "connect") and the cop hasn't been a survivor for nothing. There are gruesome moments in this but not near what happened in "Afraid." Overall, good read, but a bit too pat and short.

Truck Stop is an exclusive ebook on Kindle by Jack Kilborn and J.A. Konrath. You may not know this unless your an avid fan but Kilborn and Konrath are one in the same.

It brings 3 characters together from 3 different books. Donaldson (Serial), Taylor (Afraid), and Lieutenant Jack Daniels (from the Jack Daniels series). Two serial killers and a cop come face to face in a Truck Stop. Never having met before they happen upon each other while chatting it up Jack (obviously having really bad luck with serial killers) happens to walk into the same Truck Stop. Donaldson recognizes her and immediately wants her for his collection. Taylor and Donaldson fight over who actually wins before settling on coin toss.

It's all very fast paced and exciting. I really enjoyed reading all three of these characters together. I love these little short stories.

I am new to Konrath/Killborn. This is my 3rd story/book by him and all 3 have kicked butt. Non stop action...some actual inner thinking...and a ton of violence. What happens when 2 serial killers meet and decide to team up? You won't believe what happens. Awesome!

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, September 6, 2011

I was disappointed. At first the book was too full of raw brutality for my tastes (man eating parts of a woman while she is still alive and restrained). As I was about to quit and started skimming over the story it turned around somewhat. It is not sophisticated writing, nothing of the quality of a Stephen King, just raw animal brutality that turned into a simple B-movie type story. Half way through the book the story ended. I would guess this is maybe a 30-minute read, if that. The rest of the book that I paid for was an interview with the author which was just advertising for the rest of his books. A very long advertisement I must say, that should have paid for this simplistic story. I'm sorry I paid 99 cents for this and will remove it from my library, the fist time I've ever done that with a Kindle book that I bought.
