Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5-In the tradition of Davis's The Redneck Night Before Christmas (Pelican, 1997), this lumbering poetic salute to the "good buddies" of the roadways takes place on Christmas Eve at the Midway truck stop. "The rig jockeys were weary, they just had to flop." Their evening is enlivened by a visit from "St. Nick and his swank Christmas truck." "This Christmas-time trucker was a real midnight flyer,/And his beard was as white as a new whitewall tire!" The leaden rhymes overflow with trucker terminology, requiring interpretation by adult readers who know the language of the road. Rice's amateurish illustrations combine with the corny text to make this an item most libraries can skip, although a reader who can muster up a Johnny Cash-style twang could make this a humorous addition to a holiday storytime.-A.C.

TRAVELS WITH GRANDPAW
A memoir of Texas Tales

I'd like to tell you folks a bit about my new ebook. "Travels With Grandpaw" is Tuesdays With Morrie--in Boots. I'm usually known for my children's picture books. This is my venture into non-fiction writing for adults. It's my coming of age story with Texas in the last century as a backdrop. A memoir of Texas tales.

I traveled with my beloved "Grandpaw" Raymond Lacy (1905-97) across Texas in a relationship that spanned forty-nine years. He taught me about hunting, fishing, loving, kindness, courage and loss. We had many adventures and you can share them, too.

Visit South Texas as Grandpaw faces off against the smartest stub-tailed one-eyed pirate of a rat in in the Lone Star State. Travel back to a Hill Country Christmas in the 1880's as told by an old cowboy born in 1869. Corner a wild tomcat in a Cherokee County outhouse with Raymond and his brother, Alton in 1910. Celebrate an early 1900's East Texas Christmas with a buckboard full of roman candles, a new Barlow pocket knife, music, firewater, and a kind old Cherokee named Joe.

Come along with David, and watch a monumental skeet shooting contest between Grandpaw with his old square-backed Browning and an arrogant skeet shooter shooting an engraved Beretta over and under outside of San Antonio in 1960. Watch Grandpaw and David as they encounter a dancing duck thief near Indianola, Texas.

Attend a country wake in the Texas Piney Woods. Ride along with Ray's band in 1920 when they play a rural dance--and have to fend off a gang of troublemakers and a vicious pit bull. Stand beside Grandpaw as he stands up against four young hoodlums--when he was in his eighties!

This book is about growing up, growing old, and the wheel of life, but mostly it is about laughter--and Raymond Lacy, an unbribed soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful new context for "Twas the Night Before Christmas", February 15, 2011
This review is from: Trucker's Night Before Christmas (The Night Before Christmas Series) (Hardcover)
Many writers have penned modernized versions of the classic poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clarke Moore, setting the story in a different context from the 1822 date of first writing. In this book the basic rhythm of the original poem is kept, only this time the context is that of long haul truckers at a truck stop. It is once again the night before Christmas and the drivers are all wishing they could be elsewhere rather than moving a load.
Suddenly there is a great clatter outdoors and it is a man in red driving a Mack truck. St. Nick has arrived to spread some cheer, only this time he is not relying on deer. He pops into the cafe with a bag over his shoulder and passes gifts out to all, making the evening much brighter. Once he tips all the workers in the cafe, he hops back in his eighteen-wheel sleigh. As he leaves the place, he is heard to say, "I'll miss the weigh stations - I'll take the back way."
Some children's books are also able to appeal to adults; they do so by covering subject matter that is also of interest to adults. This is a book that will appeal to the truckers that are on the road delivering their loads when nearly everyone else is snug in their beds.
