The Alero grinder and its salt shaker mate are plated with soft, brush-finished copper. Tall and curvy like a large chess piece, the tool’s designed to be gripped by its body while the top knob turns to grind pepper.
The mill’s metal case houses rustproof grind gears (made from a high-grade ceramic), that mill peppercorns in a dual, chop-then-grind method, releasing as much flavor as possible. The mill may also be used to grind sea salt or spices. Grinding clockwise yields a finer grind. For a coarser grind, turn the knob counterclockwise. (A sharp quarter turn clockwise will clean out the last bit of fine-ground pepper when it's time to switch to coarse.) Unscrew the small, brushed steel knob at the top to open the mill for loading. The Alero mill comes ready to use, fully loaded with black peppercorns. The salt shaker also comes filled with salt.
The Trudeau mill and shaker are not dishwasher-safe. Wash by hand without immersing in water or holding under running tap. Use damp cloth and mild detergent to clean the mill body--towel drying thoroughly-- or use copper cleaner. Both mill and shaker measure 2-3/4 inches in diameter by 8 inches tall. Beautiful salt and pepper grinder set. It does not show fingerprints. These are a tall set, so I keep them displayed on my stove.
