A stylish, leak-proof, but poorly insulated travel mug,
This review is from: Trudeau Drivetime Travel Mug, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
The Trudeau is most excellent and the price via Amazon beats other easily. Thumbs up for style, form, and part of the function: being spill-proof. HOWEVER, I read somewhere that the "Double wall insulation provides 2 hours heat insulation". Not exactly certain what that means, but I presumed it meant "You can expect to enjoy hot coffee for up to two hours", i.e., after two hours the coffee would start to be noticeably cool.
Try 1 hour. At 2 hours, the coffee was pretty cool. And yes, I RTM and filled the mug with hot water for a few minutes before filling with coffee. No dice. I am kinda let down b/c of other containers that I have used with satisfaction: -- I was given a Caribou Coffee "Stainless Steel Thermos" (you can find it from their web site) and was very content with it - it kept coffee hot for hours. Even four hours later (sometimes meetings in the morning get in the way), the coffee was piping hot. But, it was not a mug, per se. Ok, maybe it's not fair to compare a thermos with a mug. But I think it's fair to expect between 1-2 hours of pretty hot liquid from a travel mug. -- I formerly used a Starbucks travel mug (some stainless steel thing with the widest mouth/body and slightly tapered base). Now this was a mug and it, too, kept the coffee hot for 2-3 hours. I mean hot. So, the Trudeau is 2 out of 3 cool: looks and spill-free, but not really effective at insulating. At least, this has been my experience. And no, this is not meant to be a plug for either Caribou or Starbucks.

Trudeau backslid on this one,

I bought the previous version of this mug. In fact, I bought three over time -- one for my wife and a replacement for my first one when I dropped it from a very high distance onto a hard floor below. I LOVED it. Heck, I practically *evangelized* it to others, some of whom I know bought one for themselves. The original was truly leak-proof, convenient, and lasted forever. The biggest advantage to the original mug was that the way it was designed ensured that it would NEVER become a "dribble goblet" the way every other travel mug does over a period of time of carrying hot beverages. Plus, I could fill the mug and still drink my coffee relatively hot 2 hours later.
If I were reviewing the original mug right now, I'd give it 5 stars and wish I could give it six. The only improvement I could imagine for the original -- which I wrote to Trudeau about -- would have been to coat the outside with some sort of plastic. This would be for two reasons -- one, to contain the heat even better than the stainless steel exterior did, and two, to remove all exterior shininess so it could be put in a microwave. BUT... I'm not reviewing the original. I'm reviewing the current version, which I just purchased two of (a Black version and a pink Breast Cancer Awareness version). And I can't give it five stars anymore. I'm even a little leery about giving it four stars, but it is still the best mug out there, so I have to. How did Trudeau backslide on this version? Well, they lost the "dribble-goblet-proofing" I mentioned above. You see, the reason almost all travel coffee mugs eventually start to drip down your lower lip is that the heat wears away the plastic seal on the lid. Eventually, it'll work away enough that an ever-so-slight drip can eke its way out. But the original mug had no external seams, so there was no way for this to happen. Rather than having the bottom of the lid meet the top of the cup, as all others I've ever seen do, the lid fit down inside the top of the cup and screwed in from there. So, your bottom lip did not rest against a seam. This most important feature is what they did away with in the current version. Your lid screws ON rather INTO the top of cup. And after a few months of usage, it's starting to drip just a very little bit. They have a new sort of mechanism on top of the cup that opens and closes the cup for drinking and helps keep your coffee hot for hours. It still works OK -- I still get a couple of hours of hot beverage out of it. And I see why they changed the design... The new mechanism is actually a little more convenient to open and close. But at the price of it eventually becoming a dribble goblet, it's a step backward to me.

Just what I have been looking for!!!,
This review is from: Trudeau Drivetime Travel Mug, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I have had the more well-known travel mugs, and thought that they were the best. Well, I was wrong. This travel mug is by far the best out there. It is truly leak-proof. My friends get tired of me turning it upside down (I guess I'm easily amused hehe), but I really do like a mug that won't spill if tipped over. When turned to the drink side, the liquid flows at about the right rate, not too fast, not too slow. Anyway, I can't say enough about this mug, and the price also beats the competition.

No leak and no heat,

The mug doesn't leak; that's good, but the liquid cools quickly, too quickley. Drink fast!

Overall this is a good, large travel cup. The only drawback is that the cap is almost impossible to clean properly.

Leaks!,

This mug leaks through the joint between the lid and the rest of the mug. Especially when you are towards the end of the drink.
It's also almost impossible to clean the lid properly due to it's design. Also, it really doesn't keep drinks warm at all. They cool at the same rate as drinks would from a normal non-insulated mug (even with the lid on and closed, and even following the instructions to pre-heat the mug with hot water!) Overall a huge disappointment. The positive reviews baffle me, maybe mine is defective in some way as it seems to fail in every category it claims to excel in!

Works great after a quick fix,

Before I ordered the Trudeau mug I read all the reviews and was worried it would not dispense coffee in a drinkable fashions. Many of the reviews stated the coffee dribbled out or didn't come out at all. Sure enough when I received my mug, it would not give up the coffee in the open position. Surely the manufacture would not sell a product that didn't do exactly what it was intended to do. So after a close look I noticed a screw in the middle of the lid. I could see the clearance between the rotating part of the lid and the seal didn't open enough to dispense the coffee. While holding the top of the rotating part I loosened the screw to increase the clearance between the seal and the lid (just a little).
I put lid back on and it now works perfect.

Best Travel Mug on the Market,

I have a medical problem which requires me to drink ice water nearly every 10 minutes. Therefore, I must have a travel mug next to me at all times. My mug gets knocked over or dropped at least once per day. At one time or another, I believe that I have tried nearly every travel mug on the market to find the to find the best. The Trudeau mug has a screw-on top which does not leak and is easy to get on and off. The mug can be cleaned easily and is one of the least expensive mugs.

This product works very well, it is easy to drink out of, keeps my drink hot for a long time, and doesn't leak! It fits in cup holders easily and is very practical.

not as good as my older Trudeau Travel Mug,

I purchased this to try and replace my older Trudeau Travel Mug that had a screw in lid. This new "Drivetime" mug is not as good, because it leaks... Not a lot, but enough to stain my car, backpack, shirt, etc..
Otherwise it is very similar to the older mug. In regards to insulation it keeps my coffee hot for two hours as advertised, and that's plenty for me. It's also easy to drink out of, but then so is the old one.. and the old one doesn't leak! |
