True Blend by Joanne DeMaio
Without even knowing what this book was about when I was approached to read/review/blog tour I jumped at the chance. I have loved the author's other works and knew this would be a good one also.
I was not disappointed. Starts out with Amy who is a widow of just one year and she has a 2 yo daughter, Grace. They lead a routine schedule but one morning Grace is taken by armed robbers who also take an armored truck.
She obeys their final words and not contact the police for over an hour. She is returned and Amy finds it hard even with her mother there to trust people again. She works at the bridal gown shop out of her house.
The story also follows George Carbone and him being the hero for returning Amy to her mother. Problem is he has issues of his own and never wanted to be part of the armed robbery, never mind taking a child away from her mother. He's also finding it hard to not only trust people but carry on under the guise of being a hero when in his mind, he is not.
Love the locale, hearing of the bridal gown accessories/design work and learning about other career choices described.
Therapy helps Amy and what to expect from her flashbacks and Amy's that might help the police... What amazes me is we as kids growing up also put cards held with clothespins on our bike spokes.
Love how the whole story comes together with pieces from the past days and months that all fit in. Such detailed descriptions of the dates and day trips, priceless! Learned new things: gun therapy and process of the whole thing, meat market and all it entails from the food, inventory to cleaning and operating of the tools needed to do the trade.

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Format: Paperback
On a serene day in spring, in the lovely town of Addison, Connecticut, Amy Trewist, a widow, is running errands with her toddler daughter Grace. As they reach their destination at the bank, unknown to them, on a parallel path, George Carbone and his brother Nate are getting ready for a trip to the casino...but first, they must stop at the bank.

Suddenly chaos reigns. An armored car heist is underway, and Grace is grabbed, just as she and her mother exit the bank. Men wearing stocking masks and bearing guns now control the scene, and the spring day is no longer serene. All that Amy can remember in the moments afterwards were one man's words: Be strong. And the warning to wait one hour before calling the police. She recalls a hand holding her down, and later will not remember any other details, except in flashbacks, when something is always missing....

The nightmare seemingly ends when a man named George Carbone finds her daughter in a parking lot of a store and brings her to the police. What happens over the summer that still simmers with the unsolved crime is how George becomes a regular part of Amy's life. She sees him as a protector. Especially since Grace no longer speaks, and seems to be more lost by the day. Is Amy becoming too dependent on George? Or is something more happening? And what secrets is George hiding?

In this beautiful town where Amy has a vintage bridal shop and wonderful friends, she no longer feels safe. Strange things are someone stalking her, or is her memory failing? Her life is in pieces and the only person who makes her feel safe is George.

The richly drawn characters soon became part of my life, too, as I eagerly followed them through the nightmare.

Joanne DeMaio’s fourth book, True Blend, brings her readers back to the quaint town of Addison, Connecticut, to meet new characters and even catch a glimpse of some familiar faces. Young widow Amy Trewist is finally beginning to recover from the loss of her husband when her daughter Grace is stolen from her in the midst of a bank robbery; in a mere three minutes her life is uprooted, and when her daughter is finally returned she knows their lives will never be the same. All she can remember of the scene is a compassionate promise from a masked assailant and the feel of a hand over hers. Local market owner George Carbone has always been aware of the distance between him and his brother Nate, a rift driven between them by their father’s death; one that Nate tries futilely to avoid. Their only connection now is their penchant for casinos and card games, but when Nate raises the stakes George finds himself drawn into a new sort of gamble, and he’ll be faced with a choice that could cost people their lives: especially two year-old Grace Trewist. As George and Amy’s lives entwine, powerful feelings will war with a plague of secrets as their lives spiral into unforeseen change.

True Blend marks a unique turning point in DeMaio’s evolution as a writer. While her previous novels explore her ability to capture all the complex nuances of personal relationships, True Blend’s story reaches additionally into elements of crime, suspense, and mistaken identity. While the nature of the novel’s plot is decidedly new territory, DeMaio’s reliable narrative style and her talent for crafting memorable characters manage to draw True Blend comfortably into the family of her previous work. Readers will be at home in the fictional town of Addison while discovering new layers of DeMaio’s ability as a storyteller.
