Book Description

February 15, 2011 True Blood
Blood and sex mix on a hot rainy night at Merlotte's, when Sookie and her friends are trapped by a vengeful spirit who feeds on shame. People die and dirty secrets are revealed as Sookie, Bill, Eric, Sam, Tara, Jason, and Lafayette and are all coerced to dig deep and tell painful memories from their past — those things we all have locked within us that we never tell another living soul! Bon Temps, Louisiana has never been stranger, or more twisted, in a story co-plotted by True Blood series creator Alan Ball, with a script by David Tischman (Bite Club) and Mariah Huehner, and lush art by David Messina (Star Trek: Countdown).

I found the jerky little bits of prose didn't make for a very full story. carb101  |  6 reviewers made a similar statement

4.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Good February 19, 2011
Format:Hardcover
First of all, I have to say up front this was my first time with anything Tru Blood. I've not seen the show or read the books it's based on. I do understand the basic idea that they built on with vampires admitting they're real and the telepathic waitress. I decided to pick this book up on a whim just to get a "cold" impression of the series.

Honestly, I was pretty impressed. Mystical circumstances force several of the main characters to admit to each other their deepest shame. It's a simple but very compelling way of telling several stories. Even though I wasn't really familiar with the characters I was able to get the basic deal with each of them such as "This guy is a shapeshifter" and "This guy is a vampire who used to be a viking," and so on. And while I might not have really known the characters each story that they told was sad, painful and fleshed out their character.

This was greatly helped by the art which was pretty realistic and added a lot of atmosphere in several places. The book also had a small collection of the single issue and variant covers in the back of the book which is always a nice bonus.

If you're a Tru Blood fan I'd really suggest picking this up as it delivers several good tales that add depth to the established characters. If you're a more casual fan or coming in cold like I did give this book a look. It's perked my interest enough to finally check out the show first chance I get.

4.0 out of 5 stars All Together Now Truly Delivers February 26, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Note, this is set within the True Blood TV Series, not The Southern Vampire Mysteries.
All Together Now seems like it is set between seasons 2 and 3 of the hit TV Series True Blood. It features all of our favorite characters being trapped at Merlot's by a mythical being and being forced to reveal there deepest darkest secrets. The art and dialogue is excellent. Plus we get to see into the mysterious past of Eric and Godric. The stories were fairly shocking, except for Jason's... I saw his coming a mile away. The covers to each issue are absolutely gorgeous. I would recommend this comic for any Tru fan.

As another reviewer was quick to mention, this volume is directly connected to the HBO series True Blood rather than the Sookie Stackhouse novels. It may not appeal to fans of the books alone (as we see with another reviewers oh so "eloquent" musings on this review page), however anyone who is a fan of the HBO series should definitely pick this up.

First of all, it comes in a beautiful hard cover edition rather than your standard paperback volume, so props to the designers for producing a high quality product at an affordable price. The contents are very well done, with artwork that captures the look of the characters and, while not perfect, tends to avoid the visual butchering of certain characters that is so common in the transition from screen to comic page. As far as the story goes, it's written in part by Alan Ball ... so really, you can't go wrong if you enjoy the pacing and storyline found within True Blood episodes. If anything, Ball is able to flex his creative muscle a bit more because he can do things in a comic that might not be feasible for True Blood's budget (though here's a tangent for HBO - throw more money at Season 4 please! When a character like Russel from Season 3 talks about an all out vampire war ... let's get a budget that allows for that rather than a few final episodes that end with more of a whimper than a bang.)

Bottom line, if you enjoy the show and can't wait until Season 4 arrives later this year, you won't find a much better fix than this book to sate your vampiric cravings for a healthy dose of True Blood. (Well this AND Charlaine Harris' new book 'Dead in the Family' coming out May 4th!)
