A True Blue Aussie,
By
This review is from: True Blue: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
First let it be known that I am a Kiwi, so for a Kiwi to rate an Australia artist as outstanding says a great deal. I first heard John Williamson in 1993 while I was working in Kuwait with an Australian mate. Many an evening after work and a few cold beers we would put John W on the stereo and sing along to songs such as True Blue, Papa Whisky November and We Must Have A Flag Of Our Own. The songs would bring a tear to my eye. I earned to be Australian so I could call the songs my own, boast that my country had such an artist, alas I was from a country a little too far east to be considered Australian. However the songs, albeit, very much about Australia and the way of life over the last few decades are as much about being a True Blue, a good bloke, one of the boys, a best mate when you need one the most, a patriot and in general something that all honest, hard working Aussie and Kiwi guys can relate to. There are the up beat folk songs and the tear inducing ballads and some songs that just make you happy and smile and remember things from your childhood. A very uplifting CD, I would recommend to anyone that is looking for Australian Folk Music or songs that all good True Blue blokes can relate to, even if you are a Kiwi.

About time America discovers John Williamson,

I've had this CD for a couple of years now, but had to buy it in Australia. Great to see that he's getting some international recognition. I saw him perform in Brisbane, and he is such a genuine and humble performer. It helps if you know a little about Oz culture and history, but he's easy to listen to, and enjoyable even if you don't.

Dillon Meets Stephen Foster,
This review is from: True Blue: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
True Blue represents what I think as quintesentially Australian songs. But it's also universal in its appeal. You hear the sounds of protest in songs like Rip Rip Wood Chip and the sounds of folk in Mallee Boy. If anyone has visited Australia, this album will always bring you back there.

I gave this to Mum for Christmas with the selfish intent of her letting me 'keep it for her'. It's not worked out that way! She's been listening to the CD in her car ever since. She keeps saying I really must hear "Mister Emu" and "The Vasectomy Song", but she never makes a move to let me borrow it. Even when hearing "True Blue" made her cry while driving and she said I must take the CD away, she's kept it. She has graduated to quoting bits of some song about a crocodile. I am seriously considering buying my own copy because at this rate I never ever will get to even borrow the album let alone 'keep it for her'.

True Blue CD is a beautiful remembrance,

My mother and I first heard John Williamson's song "True Blue" when he sang it at Steve Irwin's memorial service. It is a fantastic song, a lovely remembrance of a loved one who has passed. My mom was terminally ill, and we will be using it at her memorial service. The CD is mostly upbeat, with lots of happy Aussie folk songs. There are, in fact, over 40 songs on the CD. But "True Blue" is Williamson's chef d'oeuvre. It's worth the price of the CD simply to have this song in your collection.

Fond memories,

This music reminds me of the trip of a lifetime my daughter and I spent in Australia last summer. Great folk music from a very special country.

I haven't gotten this CD yet but I have to say that I learned about him from Steve Irwin's funeral. His music just captured me and I became an instant fan. It's too bad that it took such a tragic event to bring him to USA citizen's fan base.

I love this music, I have the original cassettes of all these songs but having them all on CD's is great. His ballads are wonderful. If you listen to John Denver you will love this too.
