RECONNECT WITH THE PERSON YOU'RE MEANT TO BE

A four-step process that opens the door to a meaningful life...

Life's authentic moments provide the groundwork for connection to ourselves, others, and God, allowing us to assess what is most important in our lives and uncover the True Self. Such moments of clarity often result from crises, such as illness or loss, that awaken us to what is truly valuable. How can this be achieved in everyday living? Dr. John Chirban helps us assess the degree to which we are, or are not, connected to the True Self-- and shows us how we can reconnect. From everyday men and women to notable Americans, including Tom Brokaw, Ron Howard, Maya Angelou, and Sandra Day O'Connor, the stories featured in this book underscore Dr. Chirban's message of the costs of losing the True Self, as well as the rewards of opening the heart to oneself and others. Dr. Chirban also offers an examination of the seven intrinsic qualities of the True Self:

  • Spontaneity
  • Reasoning
  • Creativity
  • Free Will
  • Spirituality
  • Discernment
  • Love

By exploring these qualities and through the exclusive personal stories found in True Coming of Age, readers will begin to explore their authentic nature and to engage their innate gifts, igniting their unique evolution and experiencing a true coming of age.

From Publishers Weekly

According to Chirban, each of us already possesses the intrinsic gifts necessary to live a fulfilling life-we just need to uncover them and find our True Selves. "Authenticity" is a buzzword in pop psychology, but Chirban isn’t a typical pop psychologist: a clinical instructor at the Cambridge Health Alliance at Harvard Medical School, he has both a Th.D. and a Ph.D. and an abiding interest in linking medicine, psychology and religion. He offers a three-part process for achieving what he calls a "true coming of age," in which we "find fulfillment and understand our purpose." While this book offers questionnaires and tests to help readers achieve this goal, Chirban’s is a deep process of coming to know your True Self; "opening your heart" and developing authentic relationships with other people; and "embracing your soul," and developing your spiritual side. For readers willing to engage in difficult internal and spiritual work, Chirban offers a supportive and useful guide.

"One of the most difficult things to accomplish is to explain authenticity to someone who has neither the experience nor the inclination to take control of his or her life. Dr. Chirban has found a way. He has talked with truly remarkable people who live their authenticities and serve as models of greatness in this regard. We can deny our authenticity, distort, or as exemplified, grow into the creative selves we were destined to become. This book is an inspiration to those who realize they do, indeed, have their own authenticity."
--Dr. Phil McGraw, #1 Bestselling author of The Ultimate Weight Solution, Self Matters, Relationship Rescue, and Life Strategies

"True Coming of Age is a unique and most eloquent statement which helps each of us understand the meaning of spiritual maturity and gain a keener sense of our own responsibility . . . Dr. Chirban affirms Universal Truth, Goodness, and Love--which we each possess and must live--and which unites us all."
--Archbishop Iakovos, Former Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of North and South America

"True Coming of Age is a masterful and compassionate book of essential guidance for our contemporary spiritual culture. Inspired and passionate about the search for meaning, author John T. Chirban, Ph.D., Th.D., has drawn from years of clinical research as well as heart opening personal experiences to write this text which reads like a porthole into the soul."
--Caroline Myss, author of Sacred Contracts and Anatomy of the Spirit

"John Chirban's wise and beautiful book . . . goes far beyond the engaging interviews with successful people that form its bones, to flesh out the real nature of success."

5.0 out of 5 stars True Coming Of Age, Find out just how True!, July 7, 2005
By
This review is from: True Coming of Age : A dynamic process that leads to emotional stability, spiritual growth, and meaningful relationships (Hardcover)
I have read the book three times and feel that Dr. Chirban delivers a true and fresh perspective on discovering exactly who we are. Simply stated; how do we uncover our shell to find out what drives us - why do we behave certain ways - what is the underlying motivation in how we choose our life's path. This "manual" is helping me search inside myself & dig deep to reveal my authentic roots.
Dr. Chirban gave great illustrations through his interviews with high profile people and made their authenticity "real" for everyone. From the basics and complexities of love, to careers, sexuality, family dynamics and personal faith, Dr. Chirban leads you down the path of true fulfillment, coming from within yourself and reconnecting with your inner being, and hearing your true inner voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Coming of Age by Dr. John Chirban, August 14, 2006
This review is from: True Coming of Age : A dynamic process that leads to emotional stability, spiritual growth, and meaningful relationships (Hardcover)
What do Maya Angelou, Lucille Ball, Tom Hanks, Diane Sawyer and Jay Leno have in common? They have all provided exclusive personal insights during their interviews with Dr. John Chirban, which are incorporated in his "True Coming of Age." Not only were the interviews with these famous celebrities riveting and heart wrenching, but they provided a wonderful framework for the meaning of true coming of age and establishing our True Self.

By using various exercises throughout the chapters to exemplify and illustrate the True Self in which we are all capable of achieving, this book proved to be an informative as well as interactive masterpiece.

This might sound a bit surreal but after reading Dr. Chirban's True Coming of Age, I have a new outlook on life. I try to live each day to its fullest capacity and try to put minor stressors in the "back burner." This book has enabled me to feel a sense of inner peace which I had never allowed myself to experience before. This is a must read for everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars TRUE COMING OF AGE IS A GIFT FOR ALL SEASONS, September 28, 2005
By
Emmanuel J. Karavousanos (Bellerose, New York, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: True Coming of Age : A dynamic process that leads to emotional stability, spiritual growth, and meaningful relationships (Hardcover)
True Coming of Age is so well written, it is reality in the making for any reader seeking insight into the self.  I found that here is a book so beautifully crafted that almost anyone can enjoy its healthy, gentle way of drawing us and encouraging us to reach for our goals and dreams.  Often, for many, a book may seem too challenging or even threatening.  But here, written as it is, we find understanding of any apprehensions we may have.  Dr. Chirban, a most gifted writer, is quickly recognized as not only being knowledgeable in psychology and theology, but most familiar with the fundamental quirks of the mind.  With certainty we realize that a steady, knowing hand wrote the words that compel and encourage improvement without stress.  Emotional maturity is attainable through insights gained throughout the book.  Strength of spirit is fostered by helping us shed fears, as well as our often long established "hang-ups."  The patience we learn allows us to improve our relationships.  Indeed, by personal improvement, we make the world a better place.

Early on, Dr. Chirban helps us understand aspects of our makeup often ignored, and successfully raises our desire to improve.  In so many ways he shows us how to question the self, assess the self and improve the self.  We begin to sense a wholesome process taking place as we read words that trigger so many insights.  Realizations do not often come easy, but here, plentiful as they are, we soon bask in the freedom they give us.  True Coming of Age is a gift, a present to give to our selves ... and surely, a wonderful gift of enlightenment to give to friends and to our loved ones.
