From the Manufacturer

True Crime: Streets of L.A. for Mac OS is a Grand-Theft-Auto-esque action/driving/shooter that allows you to take control of Nick Kang, a cop out to solve a strange rash of crimes and solve his father's mysterious murder. The game treats itself like a movie, with frequent dialogue and cinematics, a soundtrack filled with some of rap's heavy hitters, and some surprising voiceover talent, like Christopher Walken and Snoop Dogg.

The missions given to you tend to involve shooting up or beating up (there is a big distinction between gun fighting and kung fu) a room full of bad guys, or simply have you racing against the clock in your car. In between, you can roam around and solve simple street crimes (mugging, car jackings, etc), or earn upgrades for your driving, shooting, and fighting abilities. The upgrade mechanism is important because while it's an entertaining way to add new gameplay elements several hours in, the early game leaves you with so few moves that the game is hard, or worse, boring. The game also features a Good-Cop/Bad-Cop karma system that rewards or punishes you for doing the right or wrong thing. Arrest criminals in non-lethal manner to get better endings, or terrorize the populace and have both citizens and police turn on you.

While it can be an entertaining take on the Grand Theft Auto genre, True Crime tends to suffer from hit and miss execution. For every compelling game element, there's another equally awful one. There are several mission types that are completely devoid of any fun, melee fighting favors button mashing even after the nearly-useless string of upgrades, and the controls and camera seem to work against you more often than for you. Ultimately, hardcore Grand Theft Auto fans and the infinitely patient may be in for a treat, but everyone else is advised to think twice about this game.--Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover

Pros:

  • Variety of mission types keeps game from getting overly repetitive
  • Karma system and plenty of alternate cinematics add to replay value
  • Excellent voice work and above average graphics

Cons:

  • Controls feel sloppy and the camera will make you want to punch out your screen
  • Certain mission-types are just plain boring
  • Melee fighting favors button mashing over thought-out, timed attacks

True Crime: Streets of LA takes you into the life of Nick Kang, a cop whose lethal skills earn him a dangerous job. He's going deep undercover, to defend L.A. from the Chinese & Russian mobsters that are drowning it in blood. It's a wicked combination of duel, brawls, stealth and racing games. Shoot it out, fight the crooks by hand, or outrun them in the fastest cars on the street. Multiplayer mode with five challenging modes - fight, race and shoot your way to being king of the streets

2.0 out of 5 stars Over Priced Game!, March 21, 2005

I don't understand why this game is selling for around $50.00!!! I just bought it and the first 15 minutes were frustrating! My computer is well over the system requirements and it's still choppy! It seems like it's several frames behind even when I take it down to the lowest resolution. The camera is horrible! You have no control over it, and for some reason it goes where it wants to instead of staying behind the character. I was being shot at and I couldn't even see the guy shooting at me, I was running around in circles untill he killed me. I was fighting a guy and the camera was showing a close up of my face the whole time! It wasn't untill after the fight that I realized I wasn't fighting him any more but started beating up a civilian! Also for some reason the graphics keep popping, the roads will flash white as well as some other elements making it hard to judge where I was going and what I was looking at.

This game should be selling it at the most for $20.00. I just read the manufacter review at the top and even they talk about how bad the camera work is. What I don't understand is if they know that it's going to make you so frustrated that you will punch your screen...then why sell it? especially at the price they're asking. I hope either a patch comes out that fixes most of these problems or at least lower the price. It's sad, this game has potetional if they can fix some minor things.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crap Control Even Worst Flow, December 29, 2005

This could have been such an awesome game. The camera controls are the worst since Pirates of the Caribbean. I found myself fighting camera angles more then crimals. How did this ever get out of beta?? Sucky game flow and some mega boring missions. Save your money. Wait until this goes into the dollar stores. Then you over paid by 78 cents.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really not that bad, September 10, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: True Crime Streets of LA (Mac) (CD-ROM)
True Crime for Mac is certainly no Grand Theft Auto (by a longshot), but it is a fun and somewhat immersive shooter. The 200-some sq. miles of LA beats the crap out of Vice City's terrain any day. While that camera sucks and there are some seriosu graphics issues, True Crime is worth it for Mac-using fans of the genre.
