3.0 out of 5 stars Romance off balance with Navy SEAL suspense
Dee Henderson gives an in-depth insight into the lives of the Navy SEALs and their families. I enjoyed the book, but often found myself skimming through the lengthy sections focused only on SEAL operations. As compared to her other books (Danger in the Shadows, The Guardian...) the characters were not as well developed nor was the romance. In general Henderson is a...

5.0 out of 5 stars Move Over Brockman, December 1, 2000

There is just something about a man in uniform which has romance readers' hearts all a tweeter especially if the uniform is that of a Navy SEAL. One need only look at the highly successful SEAL books by Suzanne Brockman to know what branch of the military service is the reader's favorite. Well move over Susanne Brockman, there is a new kid on the block who has created a truly stunning tale of love and devotion to God, Country and to those left behind when the missions are done. TRUE DEVOTION is the remarkably poignant story of a Navy SEAL widow and the man whose love for her is tied to her husband's death. Multnomah author, Dee Henderson, who has captivated romantic suspense readers with DANGER IN THE SHADOWS and THE NEGOGIATOR, has crafted a tale of love and devotion sure to fascinate the most cynical reader.

Navy widow and lifeguard, Kelly Jacobs has found herself in tight spots before but nothing like this. Relying on survival skills her deceased husband taught her may not be enough to save her and the young surfer as they are caught in a rip tide being drawn out to sea. As the biting cold of the water is taking its toll and darkness sets in Kelly races to keep her young charge alive and her strength up but her spirit takes the biggest toll. With the knowledge Navy SEALs take care of their own including widows, her only hope is they will be found soon by the Navy or Coast Guard. Yet, as the tide pushes them further away from the few lights still visible from the base, her thoughts drift to her husband's best friend, Navy SEAL Lt. Joe "Bear" Baker. As her faith and spirit are tested to the limit it seems she has some unfinished business about her husband's death and her growing feelings for "Bear" Baker. Will he find her in time to explore them or is it her time to join her husband?

In TRUE DEVOTION, Ms. Henderson has provided readers with a uniquely plotted story using the "second chance at love" theme; a theme sadly lacking in today's romance offerings. The fact Dee Henderson does it with a crisp professional voice makes TRUE DEVOTION a must read even if you have never read an Inspirational book. Readers are sure to become loyal fans of Ms Henderson's work after reading the first chapter of Kelly's intense personal introspection: truly incredible writing sure to make the reader's heart ache at the intensity of her feelings. Have the tissues ready!. Her impressive knowledge of the workings of Navy SEALS never takes over the story but then she never lets the spirituality of her books become preachy either. This is what makes a Dee Henderson novel something very special. If you are a fan of Navy SEAL stories, you must read TRUE DEVOTION, a story with depth and emotion far surpassing the best of Suzanne Brockman's Navy SEALs. Dee Henderson is truly one of Romance's rising stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting from page one, September 14, 2000
By
Leila McGrath (Patchogue, NY United States) - See all my reviews
I recently discovered Dee Henderson in this novel, and what a discovery! The book opens with a woman (Kelly) floating in the ocean, wondering if she will become a victim like her husband, wondering if the new man in her life (Joe), a SEAL, will rescue her. Flashbacks intertwine with the scene, as the author takes her time entering into the commencement of the story itself. Kelly is falling for Joe, but isn't sure if she has the strength to marry another SEAL. Joe's intensely in love with her, but knows her concerns. Meanwhile the man responsible for her husband's death (Raider) is out to finish off Joe's platoon, putting Joe's life in grave danger. Joe and Kelly struggle to make a decision concerning their relationship in the midst of constant distractions. In the end, Kelly herself is kidnapped by the feared Raider and thought to be dead. This event alone changes Joe's life forever. A must-read book, the best I've seen in a while. Henderson's an amazing writer, and knows what she's talking about. Looking forward impatiently for Book Two!

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, June 28, 2000
During a rescue in the Pacific off San Diego, lifeguard Kelly Jacobs knows she is in trouble as the dangerous riptide threatens to drown her. As her life flashes by, she thinks back to her spouse, deceased Navy SEAL Nick who died in a training accident. She also reflects on how her feelings for Nick's best friend and fellow SEAL Joe "Bear" Baker changed into a deep abiding love and that she no longer is angry with God for taking away her beloved spouse.

In spite of the impossible probability, Kelly expects Bear to rescue her from almost certain death. He saves her life, but she blows their friendship when she blurts out she loves him. However, before Bear and Kelly can even begin to work out their feelings of love to one another and the guilty betrayal they undergo towards Nick's memory, they must deal with the person who murdered her husband.

TRUE DEVOTION is a stirring inspirational military romance that will encourage readers to deal with grief caused by the death of a loved one. The lead characters, especially Kelly, seems so genuine, most readers will feel Dee Henderson modeled her after their own battles with grief and love. Ms. Henderson writes from the spirit and it shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars A salute to love!, August 25, 2000
By
As a former Navy officer, I am so pleased to find a book where military people and the military way of life are addressed in a realistic way. The combination of romance, suspense, and inspiration worked in this book. I found the characters to be believable, and therefore so engaging that I couldn't put the book down because they were so real I just had to find out what happened to them! The choice to try to follow God's ethics while working in the arena of the military is a difficult one, and I enjoyed watching Kelly and Joe struggle with that issue. Can't wait for the next book in this series and in the O'Malley series!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Book Without Garbage, August 30, 2005
Dee Henderson has once again written a fascinating book. It is well written, absorbing, and fast-paced, yet contains none of the lurid details less skilled authors use to attract readers. It realistically shows the struggles Christians face when dealing with adversity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Series!, July 6, 2005

I was given this series by a friend... and was a bit skeptical. I love Dee Henderson but am not a big military fan (in my reading anyway). I wondered if it would 'speak' to me! Boy ..did it ever! I was very entertained but also educated in what goes on to keep our country a safe place...I have a very different view of military people..and as always..my faith was strengthened...what a package! Again..you'll want the whole set so you can go right from one book to the next..great reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Encouragement, October 24, 2000
By A Customer
A truly enjoyable book- well developed characters, plot, and relationship. It tells a story that is not just about romance but about God spiced up with suspense. I learned alot about God, the Navy SEALS, and romance the way God intended. I am greatly looking forward to other books from Dee Henderson.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine read from Dee Henderson, July 7, 2000
By A Customer
I usually steer clear of contemporary romance novels like the plague, but I was very pleasantly surprised when I picked up True Devotion. Dee Henderson knows what makes a story riveting and what appeals to readers. I loved Joe and Kelly's story. The book is interesting, funny, and focuses on two very believable characters. The insights into the world of the Navy SEALS were fascinating. Henderson has a great book that will captivate readers from the start. I cannot wait until the sequel arrives!

I liked this book. I was instantly interested in these people's lives. How will Joe react to Kelly's declaration of love? Like any woman, I am also a sucker for a man in uniform, and Joe doesn't disappoint. I also identified with Kelly's religious struggles. I, too, have found myself merely going through the motions without examining why I am doing these things. I highly recommend this book.
