My True Essence is a book about three different women who are connected by Faith and their battle with breast cancer. This is the story of Rebecca, a woman who has it all and lives with a care-free attitude; Danielle whose beauty salon is booming but is struggling to come to terms with her diagnosis; and Jenessa whose diagnosis moves her to delve into the cloud that has been hovering over her since childhood.

The author delves into the emotional issues and turmoil that women undergo when they are diagnosed with breast cancer and their choices to whether they should have a mastectomy or chemo. I love how the author draws awareness to this devastating disease and how she makes it clear that any woman can be diagnosed with breast cancer regardless of family history. The author does this quite delicately and gracefully, delving into the many issues and avenues that a woman undergoes once she learns she has this terrible disease. I enjoyed reading this and was moved by the personal stories of each woman and their battle with breast cancer. I would like to read more of Ms Mark's work.

Format: Paperback
My True Essence by Shawneda Marks is a heart wrenching tale of three women, Rebecca, Danielle, and Jenessa, who in the process of dealing with the reality of breast cancer in their lives, establish an unbreakable bond. Amidst the trials that accompany the diagnosis of the disease, these three women must continue with their daily agendas, although it can never be business as usual again, and yet find ways to conquer the disease's effect on their lives. Mrs. Marks is very thorough in making the reader feel, and understand the women's pain. Each of the characters deals with both emotional, and physical trauma as they accept the diagnosis of the disease for themselves, or for their loved one. Pondering the possibility of an untimely death, while struggling with issues of faith, and healing, what treatments to endure, and what treatments to refuse, the women embark on a spiritual/physical journey they would have never imagined for themselves. They travel on individual paths, making decisions on everything from whether or not to have a mastectomy, to chemotherapy, how to deal with romantic relationships, and how to embrace life, no matter how difficult, along the way.The story captures the very essence of a woman, and what truly makes her a woman. Clearly, Mrs. Marks illustrates to the reader that it is not a woman's body, and in particular, certainly not her breasts, but it is a woman's soul which makes her who she is.

I always try to find something good to say. The good is the spirit of the novel. Understanding the trials and tribulations of someone fighting to overcome breast cancer is much needed. The novel was difficult to read at best. The characters were one dimensional and very transparent. The author took the time to describe things that were not important but left out the background stories of the main characters to much degree. Rebecca was self-centered and selfish. She was a very bad choice to center this story around. More could have been done with Danielle as she was one with cancer. Jenessa is still a bit of a mystery although her back story was explained towards the ending. The children, Dominique and Charles, Jr. were good to a degree but still mysteriously floated in and out of the story. The boyfriend was easy to peg. The infighting from the church may have been realistic but there was much more the writer could have done to make it more interesting. The formatting of the book was ok but I did see places where more editing would have helped. I challenge the writer to read more Pearl Cleage and Terri McMillian for style and flow. Thanks for the free offering.

I loved the fact that the author was exploring breast cancer and its effects from three different walks of life, and how God can knit people's hearts, no matter different they are, together. The disappointment came from the rabbit trails, and lack of editing.
Dani's story was the only one that kept to the necessary, and I enjoyed her character. Jenessa's story, which is her struggle with accepting her breast cancer and mending relationships closest to her - another great one. The thing I don't get is the whole bit about her ex-husband's wife. It had nothing to do with Jenessa's story - why put it in? Then there's Becca - her physical marriage is way too graphic. I don't think we all need to know exactly what kind of foreplay she and her husband have - that's what Harlequin novels are about. The character uses sex to avoid confrontation, we get it, move on. As a consequence, I would never let my daughter read this book, let alone encourage any single person to read it.
To top it off, there was no editing, which made it really hard to just enjoy the story, because I was having to mentally edit the story myself. Frustrating, to say the least.
I was looking forward to this book, and the storyline was a great one, so long as you could stick with it. I am sorry to say though, that this had way too many big flaws that took away from the story, and didn't leave me feeling satisfied at all. I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to anyone.
