Well, having listened to Country/Americana/Roots music for over thirty years, I must say that this album is a standout in many respects.
One, the musicianship is superb! Jesse Jay Harris is a blazing guitarist and mandolin player, one of the best in the west with tone and chops to go. The supporting musicians, Skip Edwards on keyboards (LA super session man), JayDee Maness on pedal steel guitar (Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Desert Rose Band, Steel Guitar Hall of Fame) National Fiddle Champion Megan Lynch, Mike Witcher on Dobro, Don Heffington on Drums, are all first class.
The production is of the highest caliber. Jesse Jay produced the record, and it shows polish, care, and exceptional "ears".
But at the heart of the record are the outstanding songs written by Mark Adams and Jesse. Each song is constructed in such a way as to allow the listener to visualize the story....Maintenance Man, about a big building super on the job, Valley of the Bears a central California beach with one of the most well written verses ever, Semi-Cool Cube about the yearning to leave the corporate world. And then the two instrumentals that feature the players picking at lightening speed and precision.
If I were to recommend one country record to buy this year, it would be True Freedom. Get it, grab your favorite beverage, sit back, and let Rancho Deluxe take you to a special place with their dialed in, tuned up, rocking country tunes. Enjoy!
