More About the Author

True to the Game by New York Times bestseller author and publisher Teri Woods has been undisputedly titled a classic. While working as a legal secretary for a law firm and juggling motherhood in Philadelphia, PA Teri Woods completed her first novel, True to the Game. She submitted her story over a period of six years to more that twenty different publishers, all of whom rejected her. When major publishing houses refused to embrace True to the Game she wasn't discouraged. In 1998 instead of giving up, Woods' printed, bound, self-published and began selling hand to hand her first book True to the Game.On December 18, 1999 with the support and encouragement of friends, Teri Woods recognized the selling power of her story. She credits her overwhelming success to hard work and perseverance. Teri Woods often slept in her car and on the couches of acquaintances, as she spent countless hours selling her books on the streets of New York. Moving thousands of books primarily from the trunk of her car she was determined to have her story read. Her grassroots tactic paid off; Teri Woods became a self-made millionaire in just three years selling her novel, True to the Game. With the release of True to the Game, Teri Woods has reinvigorated the urban fiction market and created a growing trend in publishing. As owner of Teri Woods Publishing, Woods' published: True to the Game, DUTCH I, DUTCH II, Deadly Reigns I and II , Angel, B-More Careful, The Adventures of Ghetto Sam, Triangle of Sins, Rectangle of Sins, Tell Me Your Name, Predator and Double Dose. True to the Game, B-More Careful, DUTCH, Triangle of Sins, Rectangle of Sins, Deadly Reigns I and Deadly Reigns II has all been featured on the Essence Bestseller list numerous times collectively. Teri Woods Publishing has sold over 1 million copies independently and generated over 15 million dollars in gross revenue. Woods jump started the entire urban-book marketplace. Teri signed a five book deal with Grand Central Publishing in 2007. True to the Game II (GCP, 2007) and True to the Game III (GCP, 2008) both debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list. Teri's first hardcover, the urban thriller, ALIBI will be published in August 2009

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, November 12, 2007
By
This review is from: True to the Game II (Paperback)
I loved True to the Game and was so excited when I saw the sequel on the bookshelf. I bought the book and couldn't wait to get home to start reading. Disappointed does not even begin to explain how I felt about this book. I am convinced that a different person wrote the original book. This had to be one of the worst books I've ever read. The author did not even spend any time developing the characters or storylines. There is no way Gena would have done some of the things she did in this book. Who in the he** would put millions of dollars in a freakin locker while someone is following you? There are so many things in this book that are so utterly ridiculous that I could scream. This is not only poorly thought out and written the author didn't even bother to do the necessary research to make the characters in the story plausible. Especially the law enforcement. Why bother to bring up the question of Gena's parents if it wasn't going to be developed? I'm returning this trash to the store today. I didn't even bother to finish it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gena is Back!, October 16, 2007
This review is from: True to the Game II (Paperback)
After the death of her boyfriend Quadir, Gena is back with a whole new set of problems. With Quadir's money stuffed in the trunk of her car, Gena is trying to keep a low profile while getting her life together. She is still so heart broken that she doesn't think she can love anybody else until she meets and falls in love with Jerrell Jackson. Unbeknownst to Gena, Jerrell is Quadir's arch enemy who is seeking revenge. Jerrell will stop at nothing to get back at Quadir's crew, even if he has to go through Gena first. If that wasn't enough, a mysterious person is following Gena all over the city. Quadir's old crew is having problems of their own when one of the crew members turns into a snitch.

True To the Game II is a wonderful sequel to True To the Game. Teri Woods effortlessly continued the story of Gena. This story picks up right where the first novel left off so it doesn't confuse the reader. Although this is a great story, there are a few things that readers may find a little perplexing. It's hard to believe that Gena would still be in the projects with Quadir's money lying around and that she wasn't more suspicious of Jerrell. There is a shocking ending that could lead to a third installment, but Woods would have a lot of explaining to do in order to pull it off properly. True To the Game II is a fast-paced, exciting read that will surely keep you on your toes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Know When To Fold Them, November 1, 2007
This review is from: True to the Game II (Paperback)
TRUE TO THE GAME II picks up with a still mourning Gena and a trunkful of money. She doesn't stay sad for long as good Samaritan Jerrell enters the picture. What a cruel hand fate has dealt. Unbeknown to Gena, Jerrell is the very man that took her fiancé, Quadir, from her.

Teri is brave. I'll give her that. TRUE TO THE GAME, whether she actually wrote it or not though it bears her name, is a book that can hold its own. Coming up with a continuing storyline that stays "true" to the essence of its predecessor and is just as good if not better is no easy feat. In this case, it was a gamble that did not pay off. I was looking for some progression with returning characters and found none. I was looking for an entertaining storyline and didn't find it. Main character Gena in this sequel really had no personality at all. She just functioned and moved. What happened to the Gena of old? Like, Gena, the novel just functioned and moved. Even when something big happened, nothing much happened. What could have, and should have, been a good story was lost. Not every novel needs action and drama and this watered down sequel might be satisfying for some readers. Other, however, will get to the end not caring and wondering WHY Teri Woods even bothered. Sometimes it really is best to leave well enough alone.
