Editorial Reviews

Review

This enjoyably spine-chilling collection of ghostly stories includes tales ranging from the haunting of an ordinary suburban house by a poltergeist to a 'Restless Tomb' in which coffins are mysteriously rearranged and strange changing faces that appear and disappear on the kitchen floor of a small house in southern Spain. Despite the shortness of the tales, the text is exciting and provides a real sense of danger, and illustrations including maps and diagrams add to the sense of these being genuine experiences. The cautious introduction and afterword for each story determinedly sit on the fence when considering their truth or otherwise, encouraging readers to decide for themselves what they will choose to believe and raising important questions about the significance of the paranormal and nature of storytelling. The dialogue is the least convincing part of these tales; much of it is modern and does not sit well with the geographical or historical ambience that the authors are trying to create. Still, these are satisfying stories that will be enjoyed by many children. The language is simple and the text arranged in short chunks, making this anthology ideal for reluctant readers and those experiencing difficulties. Ages 7-10 (Kirkus UK) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids eat this stuff up!, January 3, 2007
By
This review is from: True Ghost Stories (True Adventure Stories) (Paperback)
I am a third grade teacher and every year the children in my class beg for "scary" stories for read aloud time. Well, this year I did some searching for something beyond Goosebumps and the like (which I find to be rather poor literature) and this book has been a hit! Be warned, however, it will REALLY scare some kids. But on balance, not one regretted me reading some of the stories to them. They all competed to borrow the book from me to read it for themselves.
The book consists of about a dozen "true" ghost stories. These are documented stories that leave you to ultimately decide whether you believe them or not. The best is the "Bell Witch."

It reviews the stories from a fairly objective view while gathering all of the facts surrouding the legends. Historically accurate and well detailed. Anyone interested in legends of the supernatural would do well to own this book.
