The many faces of love,
By
This review is from: True Love (Mass Market Paperback)
Unlike the earlier Fulghum books I've read, this one isn't really a collection of Fulghum's writings, but instead is a collection of stories that were sent or told to him. Fulghum's role here is more as an editor, presenting other people's stories. But what stories! These stories demonstrate the vast diversity of love, and show us that love can take as many forms as there are different people. Some of these stories are sad, others poignant, and many are incredibly romantic. Scattered in between these stories are comments by Fulghum, under the heading "Perspective," where he discusses his impressions of the stories or relates stories of his own. This book is easily as reflective as any of his earlier work, but has fewer "laugh out loud" moments. It provides some interesting perspectives on relationships, and certainly is a must read for anyone who consideres themself to be a romantic.

An extraordinary and touching look at real life love stories,
By A Customer
This review is from: True Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read this book twice, once when there was no one special in my life and now, after finding the love of my life! The happy news is that it really doesn't matter whether you are in love or not while reading it; each story is sweet and poignant, and brings out the romantic in each of us. In Fulghum's previous book, Uh-Oh, he shared some of his own love stories, and asked his readers to forward their own tales, conventional or not, with him. To his surprise, he was deluged with stories, both sweet and bittersweet, touching and funny. As suggested by the author, it is the kind of book that may be picked up and read in small doses. Each chapter is separate and complete; there are reflections by Fulgham interspersed throughout. Each heartfelt story stays with the reader; some have happy endings, some do not, but each is guaranteed to touch the reader in some way.

It's a keeper on my "good book" shelf, hardback with a bookplate, the whole nine-yards. What I love is his selection and the understanding gained that love means different things to different people and (most importantly) at different times in their life. That lesson has helped me cope with troublesom relationships. I loved them for a reason at the time and that time and that reason fulfilled my need. It was enough. That is what I learned.I don't rate this book up with Fulghums' previous books mostly because it is a compilation with commentary and not pure, chapter after chapter Fulghum. That may seem like a technicality, but it made all the difference for me. It still has the same wit and charm of any of his other books. I found it difficult to sit down and get through the whole thing and feel "absorbed". It's the kind of book that you can read a few stories, put it down and come back to as you feel the need. I really couldn't read it straight through. I attribute that to the nature of it though, and not to Fulghums' writing.

True Love : This is the book will bring you joy,
This review is from: True Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I've been a huge fan for Fulghum's books. He always have a unique perspective in everything. But this book is different from his previous ones. It's a collection of love stories from many people. Fulghum just put them in this book, re-arrange and add his comment. This is one of the most honest book I ever read. Story of strange love, I would say that if we can call it "love". What does love mean? Does it limit only between boys & girls, friends & friends etc? This book doesn't answer anything at all, but it will make you think about it and finally smile.I'm very surprise with such those wonderful, lovely stories in this books. This is the book you will love. Each story has its own charm and memory. Again, as usual, Fulghum's summary in each section of the book is more than I can say. His view for love with the help of his excellent ability to select spectacular words make it a very wonderful book. Good persent for Valentine's day

True Love Stories,
This review is from: True Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book, every single one of us wonders, what is true love? All these stories have some glimpse, or taste of true love possibilities. Some are full blown true love that stood the test of time. Love is the most marvelous feeling in the world, and most desired of all experiences of humans. Yet true love so hard to explain with words, for the emotion of it is so powerful. The human experience is certainly more bleak without true love in our lives somewhere, sometime. I hope everyone who ever hopes to be in love, or has been in love will read this. I have already bought extra copies to share with my friends. What a treat Robert Fulghum is to those of us who love to read of the human experience.

Robert Fulghum is an extrordinary lover,

This review is from: True Love (Mass Market Paperback)
How's that for a catchy title? You know, I'm personally convinced that Robert is a gift from God. I love this man so much. He's like the spiritual father I never had. He tells stories and weaves tales that reach straight into my heart and remind me of Love, and how important that Love is to me... no matter how much I've tried to pretend to the contrary. This particular book has helped me to bring forth my emotional self, again. I've just cried and cried while reading it. Don't be scared though; when it comes to Love, I'm a bigger softee than anyone else I know. Hahaha, in movies my 10 year old will look over at me crying and just wonder. If you're a softee, or have ever been a softee, or wish you had more contact with your inner-softee, pick up this book. It's a really easy read. And if you're anything like me, pick up some tissues too. You are in store for a treat. Frank Boyd, Scottsdale, AZ

I must make one correction in my story in the book.,
By
This review is from: True Love (Mass Market Paperback)
Of course you'll love this book because it's a true reflection of so many facets of romantic love. And I also personally love it because I wrote the story in it about Danny O'Neal. I don't remember the title of the story, but I'll never forget my accurate description of Danny "He was like Peter O'Toole with a double dose of testorone and a Tommy Lee Jones smile." (:sweet memory and sigh here.:)
I want to make one correction that made a few people from Oklahoma and Arkansas upset. I signed it as Lilly from Fort Smith, Oklahoma. There is a Fort Smith, Arkansas about 5 miles from the Oklahoma line. I did that in a foolish attempt to make sure Danny knew it was really me because Fort Smith, OK was a joke between us. I wrote my story in about 1991. 16 years later - Danny O'Neal remains the most fascinating, thrilling romantic memory of my life. And, also since I still haven't heard from Danny in all these years, I'm hoping if he ever googles his name, this review will come up. Please forgive me.... but at the very least I want him to know how much he delighted me and that story ws no doubt only chosen because of how wonderful he was to me. :D Wishing magnificent, thrilling love to one and all, Lollie aka Lilly.

This is a brilliant little book about how the love bug can strike each and every one of us in unique ways. It's an easy read that can be digested not just by the scholar but by the common man. It's a hopeful book. More books like this should be written.Jeffrey McAndrew

The Real Thing,
By Michael Matsui (Woodbridge, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: True Love (Mass Market Paperback)
"True Love" by Robert Fulghum was one of the few books in my life I just couldn't pull myself away from. It really isn't a book written by him, but rather a collection of stores, real life stories, submitted by people throughout he United States.I simply LOVED this book. Reading these stories reinforced my already existing belief that True Love REALLY does exist... but more importantly... it reinforces my belief that Love (or True Love) need not last a lifetime, but can actually be brief moments in time... even minutes. I enjoyed reading all the stories and I enjoyed the Hope that these stories instilled in me. The great thing is... these stories are REAL. They really happened!!! So if you're the type of person who reads romance novels and thinks, "This stuff isn't real." you'll soon learn that some of those unbelievably sweet stories really do happen. These stories are so amazing and breathtaking... we could all be so lucky to have a story such as those within these pages to call our own. I'm still looking for my One True Love... who knows... after reading "True Love"... it could actually happen. |
