More About the Author

NY Times and USA Today Bestselling Author

I'm a full time wife, mother, and author. I've been lucky enough to have spent over two decades with the love of my life and look forward to many, many more years with Mr. Laurann. I'm addicted to iced coffee, the occasional candy bar (or two), and trying to get at least five hours of sleep at night.

I love to write all kinds of stories. I think the best part about writing is the fact that real life is always uncertain, always tossing things at us that we have no control over, but when your write you can make sure there's always a happy ending. I love that about being an author. My favorite part is when I sit down at my computer desk, put on my headphones to listen to loud music to block out everything around me, so I can create worlds in front of me.

So this is the 11th book in the New Species series and I must say that I was not dissapointed. This book centers around two new characters True and Jeanie. Jeanie was a technician who True grew found of while he was in captivity and she cared about him as well. She was similar to Ellie in that she was working with an outside source in order to help rescue New Species, the only difference is that her story doesn't add up so everybody is suspicious of her.

So let's start with True. I really enjoyed him, he was a very sweet character and even though he felt Jeanie had betrayed him he wasn't as bent on revenge against her like some of the males in previous books. He immediately believed her story and wanted to protect her. That's not to say that he doesn't have his own temper but the way he stood by Jeanie and supported her was just so sweet to me and made me really like him. He wasn't extremely skilled or brutal or even high ranking but he was loyal and just an all around good male. Poor Jeanie. All she wants to do is help but nobody believes her. It kind of made me angry because of course I believed her and she just seemed to sweet and innocent to be guilty of anything they accused her of. She worked in one of the many facilities that had new species and all of the species she helped remembered her for her kindness and things she did to help and protect them or just make what they were going through a little more bearable. This woman went through a lot of stuff for them and she came across to me as one of the stronger female characters that Miss Dohner has created. The relationship between her and True was very sweet and thankfully was not rift with misunderstandings and heartache. In fact it was one of the more solid relationships to me.

The premise is the same as all of Dohnner's New Species books: an evil drug company genetically engineered modified humans (now named new species); enslaved and mistreated them for drug testing; the freed new species are living in two independent areas within the USA reminiscent of Indian Reservations; and investigations continue to find other new species still enslaved.

The premise of "True" is that the leading lady is working undercover to free new species.

I could easily do a plot summary, but for once I think readers are better served by not knowing the plot. It is a mystery, and the fun is in its surprising chain of events that result from the leading lady's undercover work. Those start quickly after the first chapter, and build to a satisfying climax. This is the first time I enjoyed one of Dohnner's books more for the plot/action than for the romance/erotica elements.

Rather, let me focus on the outstanding elements of this book. Dohnner's writing style and dialog and plot building have been steadily improving, and this really shows in "True". Compare this book with "Fury" to see the most dramatic improvement. "True" finally has multiple new species males express interest in the same leading lady. This is about time, and I enjoyed how this situation played out. Next, the erotic elements are highly enjoyable, without any disturbing elements. Some of Dohnner's novels deal closely with the subject of rape to the potential discomfort of readers, but "True" does not. Finally, Dohnner lets the couple simply be happy enjoying each other, which is a rare treasure in any Romance book.

Highly recommended. There is no particular need to read this book in order; it stands nicely on its own.

4.5 stars

I enjoyed True and Jeanie's story very much and felt this installment put the series back on its original and wonderful trajectory. I liked these two as a couple, which is always the goal of course, but it's so much better when the main characters can be enjoyed as individuals as well. Jeanie brings a boatload of possibilities to this and future stories, as her experience within the research operations may shed light on the whys and wherefores for future NS. Her existing relationship with many newly released NS as a friend and supporter allows her some emotional "ins" to the community which may prove as useful to the NS cause as any conventional Intelligence.

In addition to a couple of very likeable main characters, this outing delves deeper into the past experiences of the human participants in general in the research facilities; willing and otherwise, and explores the possibilities of even more sinister offshoots to Mercile as well as infiltration into NSO at some pretty high levels.

Excellent approach that promises many good stories ahead.

Wow. True and his story made me run the entire spectrum of emotions. The storyline was completely unique (much like the previous NS books). The set up was very clever along with Agent Brice and the story around that fiasco. (I was completely surprised by that plot twist) I love how new characters are introduced and some old favorites are given a bit of story time also (I am still anxious to find out what happens regarding flame and also Ven). Darkness played a key role in this book and I will be eagerly anticipating a follow up with him in it. Overall this is another species book that made me love this series all the more.
