5.0 out of 5 stars Marty Friedman does it once again!!!, February 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: True Obsessions (Audio CD)
This release obviously shows how Marty Friedman maintains his unfathomable prowess for writing beautiful music. The overall melodic taste of this masterpiece is hard to imagine. Marty has a talent that many of today's new guitarists lack. I highly recommend this recording to anyone who has an appreciation for music in a different way!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of variety, consistently kickass, April 21, 2005
This review is from: True Obsessions (Audio CD)
This solo album of Marty's is his most diverse. He leans towards his earlier shred stuff and then goes completely new age, oftentimes in the span of seconds, such as in 'The Yearning.' I wouldn't consider this album ambitious. It's not like Marty sat down and thought to himself that he'd want some genre-hopping CD. It's all about making music to him, and that's the beauty of it.

Some of his most beautiful melodies are present in this CD. I lean towards the softer tracks. My favorites are 'Glowing Path,' 'Intoxicated' and 'Farewell.' Fantastic ideas throughout the entire album. Although he doesn't rely on his unbelievable lead guitar, he makes use of it in a great way.

'Rio' is a very sad piece with even bits of jazz in it, great stuff. 'Rock Box' is a rather silly bunch of conventional riffs, but with still some great leads. 'Espionage' is very cool and heavy. The four songs here aren't really that great as songs, but they feature Marty's leads, which make up for any lack of songwriting ability. Still, the tunes of 'Hands of Time' and 'Shine on Me' are cool enough, and 'Last September' is a cool bluesy song with great leads. 'Live and Learn' is a basic groove, up until the fast part.

Buy it. It was my first experience of Marty Friedman's solo career. I still treasure it and continue to be astounded by such sheer happy melodies present in it.
