Book Description

November 2003
A finalist in the 2002 New Historical Voice Contest co-sponsored by Dorchester Publishing and Romantic Times magazine!

Serena Langley would do anything to avoid an arranged marriage to the Duke of Fairborough. Nine years ago, the rogue had ruined her family and left for India in disgrace. Now he'd returned to claim her as if nothing had ever happened. So when an arrogant, irresistible new coachman came to work for her, Serena saw the perfect scandalous solution to her dilemma . . .

Christopher "Kit" Woodard was supposed to be Duke of Fairborough--not a servant of the stubborn bride he'd inherited with his title. Yet his daring charade was the only way to meet Serena and convince her of his innocence. But once she'd been tempted into his embrace, Kit would have to risk his reputation, his future, and his heart to learn which man had captured Serena's love--the coachman, the duke--or just Kit Woodard?

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked that he wasn't an overbearing alpha type., December 31, 2003

This review is from: True Pretenses (Mass Market Paperback)
The hero in this book is really quite something. He's a decent, caring, interesting fellow, a refreshing change from all of the overly alpha heroes in the novels I've been reading lately. The only problem I had with the book was that the heroine's rejection of the hero after they'd already fallen in love sort of fell flat. I didn't think her reaction was realistic.

It's been a while since I've read a book as refreshing and fun as TRUE PRETENSES. The plot races along, the characters are well rounded, and the author displays an easy mastery of the regency period. Serena is wonderful, but Kit stole my heart. He's a true successor to another of my favorite Regency rakes, Miles Calverleigh of Heyer's BLACK SHEEP.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Sexy and Smart - Everything a romance should be!, November 21, 2003

It has been a LONG time since I have read a historical romance novel this good! Ms. Lingefelt has captured the spirit of Regency England and combined it with intricately woven characters who come to life. The heroine's subtle humor had me rolling, and the hero had my heart pounding. Even the perfectly crafted villain surprised me. This is definitely a keeper book, one that I will look forward to reading again and again. Where can I find other books by this author??
