ROBERT ROGERS LIVES!, December 23, 2006
This review is from: A True Ranger: The Life and Many Wars of Major Robert Rogers (Hardcover)
History buffs rejoice! The definitive biography of Robert Rogers has arrived! Long noted as an expert on the man and his rangers, Gary Zaboly has put all his encyclopedic knowledge together into one weighty, handsomely designed volume. Beginning with some Rogers genealogy, he takes the reader through every facet of Rogers' life, career and personality. His prose is as energetic as the man himself was, making even the most prosaic facts interesting. It's all here - the Battle on Snowshoes, the taking of Ticonderoga, the conflict with Chief Pontiac and Rogers' role in the American Revolution. Zaboly's attention to detail is astounding; one comes away from this book with a new regard of the hardships of eighteenth century life in America. It is all documented by copious footnotes from some very obscure sources. My only complaint is that there aren't more of the author's own illustrations included; he has done numerous very fine pieces portraying various events in his subject's life.
Best of all, Zaboly gives an objective portrait of Rogers, which is what good biographies do. He doesn't deify the man, despite lauding his incredible achievements; rather, he reveals his shortcomings and makes no excuses for them. Honesty was one of Rogers' better traits; he would undoubtedly call "A True Ranger" "a thumpin' good read!" So clear a space in your library for this essential work and get ready for some truly entertaining reading.

Arguably the most well researched book on Robert Rogers. The definite account of the legendary ranger based on primary sources.
