4.0 out of 5 stars Surprising effort, surprising sound
Upon purchasing this album, I wasn't at all sure what to expect. I had heard Boyd sing "True Reflections" in a live setting but beyond that knew nothing of his personal music style...only what he contributed to DMB. After my first listen to this album, I was hooked.

Tinsley has broken out of the DMB mold, crafting his own songs that are much more...

3.0 out of 5 stars Noble effort, but uninspired
Boyd goes off and does his own thing on this album. If you like it, it definitely isn't because its similar to that of his group, the Dave Matthews Band. The vibe is sort of jam-infused, but very traditional in terms of songwriting. It's solid musically, but he could use some help with the vocals. This piece is not groundbreaking but possibly enjoyable.

Upon purchasing this album, I wasn't at all sure what to expect. I had heard Boyd sing "True Reflections" in a live setting but beyond that knew nothing of his personal music style...only what he contributed to DMB. After my first listen to this album, I was hooked.

Tinsley has broken out of the DMB mold, crafting his own songs that are much more country-flavored in style. Tinsley a unique voice that will pleasantly surpise many who expected this album to be mostly instrumental fiddling songs.

Highlights on the album are "Listen", the first single, "It's Alright" and "Cinnamon Girl"--a cover that has been slowed down and grooved out. "True Reflections" is the only song on the album in which Dave Matthews sings backup and he's used sparingly, letting Tinsley carry the concert staple with authority. The rest of the songs are uplifting and catchy, they'll have you humming the melodies after you listen.

This is Tinsley's first commercial attempt at sharing his own music with the world..the production, writing and musicianship are outstanding. He makes good use of all the guest musicians and shines through every song.

I would highly recommend this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Good, January 25, 2005

If you forget the fact that he's a member of one of the biggest rock band's in america and just look at this disc as it's own being then I find it actually quite enjoyable. Not every song here is a winner but it's a good country flavored mellow rock album. Thumbs up for boyd.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love all the members of DMB, individually and together., June 24, 2006

I am saddened to see that several reviewers chose to pick and choose who's better within the group. This album is awesome righteous and I think Boyd rocks! It's creative & different. You can't compare Boyd's album to Dave's album, b/c they're completely different. That's the whole point! Geez! Anyways, kudos to Boyd on a kicka** album. I've been a fan of DMB for almost 11 years now and I finally saw them just a few days ago in Raleigh. I'm 28 years old and I was like a teenage schoolgirl screamin' my head off and seriously jammin' out. Anyway - bottom line - all of the fellas rock and Boyd's album (as well as Dave's) is just another display of how much they are individuals with their own ideas and when they put them together it's something explosive as well. Rock on, Boyd!

and falling in love is what I did with this TRUE REFLECTIONS CD ! It was amazing....and the word amazing does not even do this CD justice. I put it on the CD player and mark REPEAT and just listen and listen and then listen some more. Boyd has one of the most sensual voices that just reaches out and envelopes you and takes you away to another place and time. Who ever thinks his voice is not beautiful must be tone deaf....full stop. If you want Dave, listen to Dave for cryin' out loud ! I love Dave, but thank God this is something and someone different with his own unique sound and style. Some of the reviews I've read here are just so unfair. His talent should not be cut down or minimized or even compared to anyone else's. It's his, his alone and it rocks ! He is a great asset to the DMB, but on his own he's nothing short of brilliant, electrifying, mesmerizing and intoxicating and I plan on falling in love each and every time I listen to this CD, which I'm sure will be daily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hats of to Doyle Bramhall ii, June 18, 2003
This review is from: True Reflections (Audio CD)
Music is a great & wonderful thing! Recently, seems everywhere I turn, Doyle Bramhall ii is making it more wonderful. While listening to the track LISTEN I was forced to read the credits because I just HAD to know who wrote it, and sure enough, there was Bramhall's name! Boyd & Doyle - outstanding combination!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good solo album, June 17, 2003
This review is from: True Reflections (Audio CD)
Boyd Tinsley is the violinist in Dave Matthews Band. He is an amazing musician and this album proves it. He is just as good solo as he is while playing with other members of DMB. This album will get him the individual recognition that he deserves. This is a great album and everyone should listen to it!! Hope you enjoy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too little violin, Too much horrible vocals, January 29, 2004

I love DMB, particularly Tinsley's contributions on violin, but he can't sing. Who told him he could sing? Boring, dull music. Please Boyd, stick to the fiddle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine Fiddlin', June 17, 2003

Boyd Tinsley, fiddler extraordinaire from the Dave Matthews Band, steps out of the shadows on "True Reflections", an excellent solo debut.
This is definitely not a DMB album, which is both suprising, and after listening, a true treat. Boyd doesn't toss out manic violin solos on every cut, choosing instead to concentrate on his singer/songwirting skills - which are excellent.
The best track is one that should be very familiar to DMB fans, "True Reflections". The guys often do this Boyd original in concernt, and Dave Matthews drops by to record lead vocals for this album. "Reflections" also features a great blast of horns from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
Boys remake of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" is also a strong performance, and the song fits easily in with his originals. If you're looking to hear some of Boyd's trademark violin playing, the best on this disc appears on "Listen", a mildly rocking track. The fiddle section on "Listen" is beautifully recorded.
Don't buy this album looking for Dave Matthews style music - but if you enjoy Boyd's playing, and the backing vocals he contributes to DMB projects, you will definitely enjoy this disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good songs with great musicians, June 18, 2003
This review is from: True Reflections (Audio CD)
Good album with great production.

The elements that really Jump out on this record are the well-written songs in it. Part of this may be accredited to Boyd's collaborations with Doyle Brammhall II which really pay off. Bramhall actually wrote the first single and his guitar playing can be heard through out the entire album.

Great pick
