5.0 out of 5 stars Santa Claus
WOW!! I had no idea the REAL story behind St. Nick. This was one of the most interesting and fun stories I have ever read. I loved the history. I think it would be great to read from every night until Christmas! This is a book that can be enjoyed by all, young and old. Great read!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars All Law and No Gospel
I am only a few chapters in but I am pretty disappointed. "The True Saint Nicholas" reads more like Aesop's Fables than actual history and the author operates from Marxist categories of have and have not rather than Christian ones of saved and lost. It is very moralistic ,and the first Gospel crumb that I have spotted is a quote from St. Ignatius of Antioch "Faith is...

This book is awesome. I was always interested in where Santa Claus came from and why he is celebrated on Christmas rather than his feast day Dec 6th. Very quick read. Very enjoyable.

This is a very interesting book. It tells the story of St. Nicholas that we all have heard - how he dropped a bag of coins in the window of some poor townspeople. It then continues to tell of the many legends about this saint. The most interesting part to me was how we came to have the American version of our Santa Claus. This book gave me a refreshed Christmas Spirit and a new way of looking at Santa Claus.

We all seem to know something about the origins of our Christmas season. Santa Claus is one part of the season that is probably the most misunderstood. Bill Bennett walks you through the history of St Nicholas showing us that he is more than a bringer of toys. He was a real person and he matter to our modern day Christmas. Bill Bennett does it again.. the author of many books Why We Fight is another that help me better understand the world in which we live.
Thanx

This small but insightful book gives a very detailed history of St. Nicholas, as well as religious and cultural customs that surround him. Well worth the read for those who love Christmas customs, but also for those who see no correlation between St. Nicholas/Santa Claus and Christmas. It would be an eye-opener.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Story about the real St. Nicholas, December 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The True Saint Nicholas: Why He Matters to Christmas (Hardcover)
The author has done a great job of collecting the many ancient stories of the third-fourth century Christian bishop of Myra (now Turkey). He was truly one who set the example of giving gifts to others. Bishop Nicholas was elected bishop of his community at an early age and served honorably. While we do not now have any known personal writings of his, we do have numerous historical details of him and his work for the kingdom of God. Bennett places the story of the bishop in the accurate historical context of the culture and the Christian church. Of course there are no red-nosed reindeer, sleigh in the sky, or people entering and exiting chimneys bearing gifts. This is a great resource for learning about the origin of the icon of the Christmas season, which has now been taken captive by non-Christian and secular images, that are not so much wrong as incomplete. This is a delightful book to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ATTRACTIVE PRODUCTION OF THE STORY OF THE "TRUE" NICHOLAS, May 6, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an easy-reading, well-written "popular" book on the "historical" St. Nicholas. (There are more "scholarly" books available---which Bennett cites in his "Further Reading" section---such as Saint Nicholas of Myra, Bari, and Manhattan: Biography of a Legend, Nicholas: The Epic Journey from Saint to Santa Claus, and Saint Nicholas: Life and Legend.)

He writes in the Introduction to this 2009 book, "there is a larger reason to remember Saint Nicholas. He matters to Christmas. This saintly man who lived so long ago has come to influence one of our holiest seasons and most beloved holidays. This influence that has come across so many centuries is a kind of miracle. It is evidence of God's love. One purpose of this book is to help put Saint Nicholas back into Christmas. It explains his connection with Santa Claus, and the common spirit they share. As you will see, Saint Nicholas makes Santa Claus a larger and richer figure than you might expect him to be."

Here are some additional quotations from the book:

"As time went on, the storytellers embroidered the tales with their imaginations. They told of miracle after miracle. In fact, Nicholas was said to have performed so many miracles, he came to be known as the Wonderworker." (Pg. 46)
"Year by year, Nicholas's fame increased... As time passed, they began to honor the bishop with a new name: Saint Nicholas." (Pg. 55)
"On December 6, 1942, Christopher Columbus dropped anchor off the northwestern coast of what is now Haiti and gave the name St. Nicholas Mole to a port he found there. He also bestowed Nicholas's name on a nearby cape and on a channel off the northwestern coast of Cuba... Saint Nicholas had reached the New World." (Pg. 66)
"The earliest surviving Life of Nicholas, dating from the eighth or ninth century, was set down in Constantinople by a scribe known as Michael the Archimandrite." (Pg. 68)
"The theologian Thomas Aquinas, in his thirteenth century 'Summa Theologica,' extolled Nicholas's gift-giving as an example of kindness made all the greater because it is offered in secret. The poet Dante, in his fourteenth-century 'Purgatorio,' evoked 'the liberality of Nicholas to the maidens' as a model of giving." (Pg. 82-83)
"It is said that Clement (Clarke) Moore, learned professor that he was, did not want to be identified as the author of such a trifle ("T'was the Night"). He did not publish it under his own name until 1844. By that time, it had become a national favorite." (Pg. 100)
"(Thomas) Nast decided the North Pole would be a good home for Santa, who could spy on children around the world with a long telescope. His pen produced drawings of Santa's workshop full of toys, Santa's list of good and bad children, and Santa's stacks of letters from youngsters all over the globe." (Pg. 103-104)
"Perhaps not literally true. But the stories of Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus are arguably true in a more important way. They are morally true." (Pg. 113)

5.0 out of 5 stars A five star subject in St. Nicholas, January 4, 2011

This review is from: The True Saint Nicholas: Why He Matters to Christmas (Hardcover)
Being one who is named "Nicholas" I have been highly interested in the history, yes history behind Christmas. We know something of the Christ Child and Santa Claus which is based upon a historical figure Saint Nicholas who revered the Christ Child Jesus Christ born in Bethlehem, Israel. Sinterklas in Dutch if you pronounce the name in American English you can easily see how the name becomes Santa Claus. It comes from Saint Nicholas the real person behind the scenes a person of love and a gift giving person to people in need in his day. Christmas is such a huge celebration and with every reason if you look at the basis. Being a Saint then Nicholas worships Christ the Messiah on the day we celebrate His birth. This book was interesting but too short. I would like to see Dr. Bennett add to and update perhaps in an all new book about our most celebrated holiday. I always am sad when Christmas ends because people go back to their usual lives without the fantasy, the joy and peace we seem to embrace so much at Christmas. It makes me want to keep my tree up all year and play the songs and light the candles and smell the holiday fragrances...but maybe someday the fulfillment will be realized and that is our hope, the blessed hope of the glorious appearing...
