Book Description

Virgin May 1997
The Foreign Legion and its soldiers have fascinated for decades. The Beau Geste myth has given them the reputation of dangerous, desperate men who have transferred their allegiance from their country to the Legion itself. Robin Hunter has explored the men behind the myth, and the operations and battles that have earned them fear and respect worldwide. Chronologically charting their 20th-century manoeuvres as a rapid reaction force, Hunter tells the story behind their campaigns: how they held back Rommel's Afrika Korps, resisted Ho Chi Min in the siege of Dien Bien Phu, how they fought in the mountains in the Algerian War and their role in Beiruit and the Gulf War.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Historical Synopsis, March 22, 1999
This review is from: True Stories of the Foreign Legion (Virgin) (Paperback)
The title of this book may be a bit misleading because the true focus of the book is not individual stories or experiences in the legion, rather a condensed and well written historical account. For anybody considering joining the legion, this wouldn't be the best source of information. Little attention is given to the legion today though it does touch on some of the mystical aspects of this sacred corps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Concise History, March 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: True Stories of the Foreign Legion (Virgin) (Paperback)
A less interesting but more appropriate title for this excellent book would be, "A Concise History of the Foreign Legion." I found it truly amazing how Hunter can very effectively size up entire eras of world history. Once he sets the stage for each historical period, Hunter lays out the Legion's role, which is usually to fight and die. This is an outstanding book for its length. If you don't have the time or heart to tackle Douglas Porch's tome (which only goes up to the 1960's) and you want a fast yet thorough history of the Legion, buy this one.
