5.0 out of 5 stars Comic Gold (and Goo)
Being offensive and raunchy is all-too-often an easy target for most up-coming comics. If you can't think of a good joke, then insult someone and some people are bound to laugh. 3.0 out of 5 stars Only for completists
This is from 2005, and has a lot of really funny ideas in it. But Tosh was not lazy; he continued to hone this material for years, and it's available in its highly polished, final form as "Completely Serious". That is one of my favorite comedy albums of all time (though I prefer the soundtrack of the uncensored "Completely Serious" video).

5.0 out of 5 stars Comic Gold (and Goo), December 29, 2006
This review is from: True Stories I Made Up (Audio CD)
Being offensive and raunchy is all-too-often an easy target for most up-coming comics. If you can't think of a good joke, then insult someone and some people are bound to laugh. Daniel Tosh, in this CD/DVD combo, does say much that is offensive, insulting, crude, gross and vicious. But, if this is believable, his comedy isn't just malicious. It's smart.

His jokes rarely follow any kind of predictable formula, and as a result, some people might find them as weird and bizarre as they are dirty and foul-mouthed. Really, though, he demonstrates a nimbleness of humor when he goes off on one of his tumble-down rants. As he says, "I like to do a joke that everybody likes and then keep taking it farther and farther until nobody has a clue what I'm talking about." It's true that you might end up confused more than once, but you'll still be laughing.

The only thing this set has against it, as others have said, is its brevity. It's normal for any good entertainer to leave you wanting more, but Tosh leaves you wanting almost TOO much more. The CD barely clocks in at 50 minutes and the DVD is about 30. Still, this is made up for by the fact that Daniel's crude complexity and incisive gibes are imminently listenable. A rarity for most comedy CD/DVDs, this one withstands multiple replays and then some.

Detractors of this set (and Daniel Tosh, in general) have accused him of being derivative and low-brow, racist and demeaning. It's very easy to look at any kind of medium, be it music, movies, or comedy, and call it a mimicry or "rip-off" of something that came before. You could pick any entertainer and trace their lineage all the way back to the days of Euripedes if you want to be a stickler about it. And those people who are offended or "hurt" by Daniel's humor aren't listening closely enough; true, he takes a lot of shots below the belt, but let's put it this way: he doesn't discriminate against crotches. Everyone (from whites to blacks, from women to men, from intellectuals to morons) is up for grabs. If you want equal respect for all people, Daniel wants equal disrespect, and he petitions for it with finely-tuned hilarity and cinder block wit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vicious but very funny, August 13, 2006
This review is from: True Stories I Made Up (Audio CD)
Mr. Tosh has material to offend just about anyone but it's very clever. He'll get on a roll, get you expecting to be offended and knowing how you're going to be offended ... then he torques it and offends you in a way you didn't see coming. He is a skilled writer and his material is definitely clever.

With that said, this is some of the most abrasive, vicious and mean spirited material out there, if that's not your bag, hey, you've been warned. At times, there is a twinge of Dane Cook in there, but I believe Tosh is better than Cook. Some of the other comparisons others have made such as Sarah Silverman are also valid, but there are only hints of that in there. Daniel Tosh is still Daniel Tosh and there's a lot of great original material in there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tosh is the greatest!, November 11, 2005
This review is from: True Stories I Made Up (Audio CD)
This CD is so great. Daniel Tosh is one of my favorite comedians and he is amazing. Most of the material is from his tour but there are a lot of classic jokes from his Comedy central Presents. Comedy Central didn't try very hard with the DVD though. It's his episode of CCP, just like it aired, without any extra features. It looks poorly compressed and yet it's still hilarious. I wish they would have added more like they did for Dane Cook or Mitch Hedberg. Tosh didn't do much but he had a few things on like Premium Blend or the Just for Laughs. Whatever. They should have done more. He's great. Buy the damn album. It's worth every penny.

no matter how many times I have listened to it. I swear, you would think you wouldn't want to purchase a comedy album because how many times can you listen to the same thing? Well, I have listened to this CD more than I have listened to most of my music CDs. I share this CD with any friend willing to listen, and they all end up thinking it is hilarious, too. And yes, the jokes are completely un-PC...but that is what they are, JOKES. Some people take things way too seriously, the person that said you would only like this if you have no self respect. If that person had a clue about Daniel Tosh before buying this, (and why would you buy a comedy album from a comedian you had never heard before?), they wouldn't have bought it in the first place. The DVD that is with it is very edited and much more sweet than the CD because it was made for Comedy Central. The CD is 100 times better. I have seen Daniel Tosh in person and he is fantastically funny, his material as well as his delivery is classic. I highly recommend, as long as you can take jokes on abortion, racism, sex, etc. If not, look elsewhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars I WAS DRENCHED FROM LAUGHING SO HARD!, March 30, 2006

By far the funniest comedian going! Funniest comedy CD to come out since Dave Attell's. And I haven't had such a great response from everyone I've had listen to it either. Definitely worth it! And yes, the DVD is a little blah since I've seen it so many times, but plenty of different stuff on the CD. I just wish he'd dip down from Irvine to come to San Diego!

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't eat white people., July 21, 2006
This review is from: True Stories I Made Up (Audio CD)
In case you wondering, that title is just a quote from one of the best jokes in Daniel Tosh's lineup. This CD is great but don't going into it expecting the clean comic you viewed on Comedy Central. Not to say he curses a lot, but enough that if you are offended easily by swearing you would be offended. He has some nastier jokes also than appeared on his live special. But the jokes are hilarious! I have been priveleged enough to see Daniel Tosh live at my local Improv and he was great and a nice guy. He signed my album cover after the show. Daniel Tosh most reminds me of Dane Cook if Dane were a little more topical. Not that Daniel gets very topical, just compared to Dane anyone could seem topical. Check him out for some laugh your [...] off funny comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Dave Attell than Dane Cook, June 18, 2007
By
This review is from: True Stories I Made Up (Audio CD)
This is one very funny concert, probably because he does push the limits. I have heard some people in here compare him to Dane Cook. Uhhh, I have a copy of Dane Cook's CDs and this one by Tosh is way funnier. Whereas Cook relies on being a cool buddy to the audience and relaying longwinded and contrived stories, Tosh tells jokes and he pushes the audience by saying things he knows they think are funny, but are perhaps a little afraid to laugh at in public. The smart humor had me just thinking more about Dave Attell, than Dane Cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Performer, April 22, 2007

This review is from: True Stories I Made Up (Audio CD)
I can't believe that, at the time of this writing, there are only 14 reviews of this CD. Daniel Tosh is, hands down, one of the brightest stars the stand-up industry has to offer right now and he will only get more popular when his next release hits stores this summer.

To sum up the cd, Mr. Tosh is an original. His material AND delivery are fresh, playful, edgy, and absurd all mixed into one fluidly entertaining package. This is a performer who has a unique idea of what his version of "funny" is and knows how to deliver it in a way that gets his audiences howling early and often.

Comedy Central Records, who has an extremely noble, albeit short, history of providing bright and original new comedians to the masses (the only noteably regrettable sidestep being Kyle Cease, and I'm sure the inevitable Carlos Mencia) really did the industry a tremendous service by signing Daniel Tosh to their team. He deserves every due he gets. Outside of the Dave Attell CD, this is probably the best album they have in their line-up.

Other than that, all you need to know is that the only possible way you can have a better time than listening to this CD is to see Daniel live at a club. I've seen him four summers in a row and hope to continue the tradition. I wish him the best and look forward to getting the next CD signed upon his next appearence in Denver. Now go do yourself a favor and pick up this Album!

4.0 out of 5 stars You did it because you're whore!, May 7, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: True Stories I Made Up (Audio CD)
One might not rush out and buy this album based on Tosh's Comedy Central Presents special. The problem with those specials is that you don't get a real feel for the comedian because they are often rushed to make the time limit and they always have to censor themselves.

This album is from a Southern California show and it's absolutely hilarious. Tosh has very unique takes on various topics and he does it with an attitude. On several bits, he will challenge the audience to the point of insulting them directly. His take on plastic surgery is brilliant and he basically tells every female audience member with fake breasts that they are whores! He's not an insult comic, so it's done with a sense of playfulness. All of his material is taken with that approach and he pulls it off.

Admittedly, his delivery and inflection is similar to Dane Cook. That's about where the similarity between the two comics begins and ends. I remember seeing Tosh in the late 90's. Dane Cook's popularity has been a more recent phenomenon. Daniel Tosh's material is very well-written, thought out and "edgey." I'm happy for Dane Cook's success, but he relies too much on physical humor and bits that are just observations with no real commentary.

I've had this CD for about 2 weeks and I've listen to it at least 6 times. I highly recommend it for people who love stand-up comedy.

Tosh has the ability to poke fun at all social groups with equality, so no offense intended. Rapid fire wit, with soft spoken delivery. He is magnificent.
