Book Description

April 1999
In True Stories of the Paras, military historian and ex-commando Robin Hunter traces the history of the Parachute Forces, capturing the daring and excitement of the historic raids and missions made by this unique fighting force, from their first jump into occupied France in 1942, through to their role today. Using first-hand accounts from participants. Hunter recalls campaigns fought by the Paras in World War II; their peace-keeping role in Malaya, 1947-50; the fight for Suez. 1954-6; their presence in Northern Ireland and the part they played in the Falklands War, 1982. Once the parachute drop is over the parachute soldier is an infantryman, but the parachute defines him and Hunter also covers in fascinating details this aspect of his training. At war, in training and keeping the peace. True Stories of the Paras paints a complete picture of one of Britain's most famous and formidable crack regiments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Well-Told, March 1, 2011
This review is from: True Stories of the Paras (Mass Market Paperback)
The author, who carefully points out that he was a Royal Marine, but did go through para training, recounts the history of the British Parachute Regiments in a series of chapters covering various combat operations through the years, including ops such as Arnhem, Northern Ireland and the Falklands. He stays away from organizational or technical details but does a credible job explaining the backgrounds to each conflict as well as what happened. The author is obviously a supporter but doesn't hold back from criticism of leadership, planning or execution, making this a more insightful book than might be expected.
