I was not impressed with this little book. It really is quite thin. I've read a fair amount on this subject and this little book seemed to repeat a lot of the common tales about this feud, nothing new. I really didn't have a lot of confidence in it. I sort of got the impression the writer was just putting down what he had heard over the years. There are a lot of different "version" of this feud, a lot of what people "know" came from the sensationalist newspapers of the time. This book seemed to repeat some of that.

At the end the author does summarize the Matewan Massacre and the troubles between the coal miners and the coal companies as the miners tried to organize into unions. That was a help to me. I have not read much on that phase of the local history and perhaps because I have read little on it but I did really have more confidence in that part of the book than the part about the feud. Of course the Matewan Massacre came several years later than the feud and was more current when the book was written. I believe the book was written in 1945.

Loved this book. Very informative, very frank and unbiased. I would recommend this book for anyone seriously searching for answers in this American phenomena.

Information about the Feud is interesting since I live in West Virginia. I have met a Hatfield and some of them are more distinguished that this documentary suggests. One Hatfield had been a Governor of West Virginia, one has been a medical doctor, and one has been a United States Senator. Several of these may be the same person since a Hatfield that probably was a doctor also was (as best I remember) a United States Senator.
