Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

If timing is everything, Henderson has it in spades as she launches the second novel in her inspirational suspense/romance series Uncommon Heroes, spotlighting military maneuvers in the Middle East. Navy Lt. Grace "Gracie" Yates is a tough, blue-eyed brunette who has a passion for flying harrowing missions. She's on the radar screen of Air Force Maj. Bruce "Striker" Stanton, who is looking for a long-term relationship despite his and Gracie's military careers, which separate them for long stretches. Henderson avoids mushy romantic cliches almost to a fault her characters are chaste, even by conservative standards, and Bruce and Gracie's first kiss is as lukewarm as old dishwater. But fresh touches of humor mixed with hair-raising rescue scenes keep readers involved, and there's enough Scripture and God talk to please the CBA market. The characterizations are wonderfully done, right down to Bruce's elderly hound dog, Emily, although overlong stretches of dialogue dilute the quality of some of the writing. The pace is often mired in incomprehensible military jargon ("She'd been given vectors to a KC-135 tanker on angels 12 as a backup, but there wasn't a bright billboard to tell her where it was in its pattern"), but readers can bail themselves out by using the glossary provided, which will be well-thumbed by the final page. Henderson's military themes and her strong, career-minded female characters are fairly original for the CBA market, and this latest installment should help build steam for the series.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* In True Valor, Henderson continues her Uncommon Heroes series about navy SEALS. Her heroine is a combat pilot, Gracie Yates, who goes down behind enemy lines in Iraq; her hero is air force major Bruce Stanton, an extractions specialist who rescues her. Both knew each other in civilian life, but their fledgling romance had been dashed because of complications with friends and their separate deployments. Henderson's writing is the envy of a lot of evangelical writers for its gritty and convincing detail: Gracie's flight control of a nervous pilot's approach to an aircraft carrier, for instance, is so well done readers will think Henderson must have been there. Lieutenant Grace "Gracie" Yates was one of the best naval aviators. Therefore, she was chosen for one of the toughest assignments. She found herself going down behind enemy lines and knew she must survive until help arrived.
Air Force Pararescue Major Bruce "Striker" Stanton was also one of the best. For over twelve years he had been pulling pilots and Special Forces soldiers from behind enemy lines. Bruce and Grace often wrote to each other, since they were posted far apart. When Gracie went down, Bruce went to work!
***** Dee Henderson has earned a special place on my book shelf! Her stories honor the nation's true heroes. (Firefighters, military, law enforcement, and medical personal are some examples.)
Once again the author plunges her characters into danger to show how love and faith can get people through even the worst of times. Gracie and Bruce seemed almost alive to me. I hated to see the novel end. I can only hope Dee Henderson's next novel is released quickly. She cannot seem to write quickly enough for me! Highly recommended! *****

Set aside a couple of nights when you can plan on staying up late
--- you won't be able to put this one down easily. I've read all of Dee Henderson's books, and each one is a keeper. This one will have you on the edge of your seat, and the incredible combination of "you are there" action, deep friendships, and two couples growing in rock-steady relationships is written as only this lady can deliver. Thanks, Dee --- the wait for the next one is always hard, but WOW! do you ever make it worth it!!!
P.S. Don't hesitate to share this series with your boyfriend or husband. They'll be hooked!

It's become so hard to rate Dee Henderson's books since I've come to expect so much from her. She's an incredibly good author who always shows that she's done her research well.

With my dad being an airplane mechanic for Lockheed-Martin, who manufacturers USA's defense aircrafts, I know a bit about the planes and procedures she so explicably describes throughout the book, since one of the main characters (Gracie) is a pilot. I must say that Henderson is very good at being knowledgeable about not only her characters, but their lives and careers as well. Great job in that aspect.

I did, however, think that the story line was a little slow. Correspondance from Gracie to Bruce, the other main character, was very often through letters, so it just didn't seem as enticing a read to me.

I will admit that I could be biased, since I knew so much about the aircraft procedures, that information seemed redundant to me, but the overall plot didn't have the punch I expected from Henderson.

If you're interested in learning about Gracie's naval career, it will make a good read, but if you're not, you won't be missing anything if you skip this book...

Having read all of Ms Henderson's books I especially like the first book in this series,TRUE DEVOTION. What made this new one in her military sereis a bit unique is the love grows through the strength of the letters our couple exchange while together and apart: she serving in the Navy and he in the Air Force. That they are both some of the time on very similar missions in the same part of the world allows for an incredibly dramatic rescue that is sure to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. In true Inspirtational Romance fashion there is no intimacy, however the sexual tension is there but more importantly so is the development of love for each other with their reliance on their faith.
What I especially like about all of Ms Henderson's books is that the characters are well steeped in their own spiritual faiths or their journey toward that end. She doesn't preach to the reader and her characters are not there as a means of converting the reader. Their spirituality is who they are and as characters searching for that one true love they rely on their spirituality to make it happen. Because of this Ms Henderson's books could easily stand side by side any single title romance that was not Christian based and hold her own in the development of the couple's search for that one true love. That through this series she has chosen to have her characters be in the military and in locations right off the front page news makes it that much more enjoyable.
I look forward to reading the next installment in this series and the O'Malley series. I am assured with future offerings of excellent reads which will allow me, the reader to identify with the individual journey toward faith and love through her incredible characters and interesting plots. Her research is impeccable.

I enjoy every Dee Henderson book I've read. True Valor was actually my first, and it's probably a good thing I started with this one. At the time I found it exciting and romantic and loved it. I've since read her entire O'Malley Series, and am working on True Honor after reading True Devotion and then True Valor a second time. I do enjoy this book and the characters, but now I feel that they are incomplete. The romance between Grace and Bruce is OK, but my least favorite of her books. Now I know the depth of emotion Ms. Henderson is capable of conveying in her writing. This book falls short of the high bar she has set with previous novels.
That being said, this remains an above par action novel, especially for the military-minded. Her description of Gracie's flights and Bruce's rescues were very lively and exciting. And I found their letters back and forth to be more interesting than their in-person encounters (except maybe for the short descritions of their two post-deployment reunions, I enjoyed those parts. But that could be because I'm a military spouse and understand how emotional they can be.)
My conclusion is that this is an essential read for Henderson fans, if only to make us appreciate the other books even more. For people who have never read a Dee Henderson novel, this is a good book to start's still excellent writing.
