Editorial Reviews

Review

"English author/illustrator Inga Moore tells the story of an inept pig who is abandoned in the forest where she finds true love in the form of Raoul, a wild boar. Raoul teachers her the lost art of truffling, whereupon she returns to her home with a fine chef. But she has also learned the folkways of wild boars, (especially those of Raoul), and the value of freedom. Martine returns happily to the warmth of Raoul's open hooves. With charming style the book tells of problems that reveal hidden opportunities. That's what it's all about." --- Uncle Jam Quarterly

"With lusciously evocative illustrations, this book not only gives us a picture of French life but it also illustrates how important it is to discover ones place in the world." --- Through the Looking Glass Book Review

"...the book can be used as a jumping off point to learn about character, respect, how to treat others, classism, stereotypes, and even a little about truffles and maybe even a little about French cuisine and France." --- Thinking Mother

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!, April 28, 2006

I am an anal retentive twenty-something. And in my anal retentiveness I started storing up childrens books for the future. Spawned by my love and fascination with the ever-growing Petite-Connoisure series I began looking for more books along those very same lines.

This is an adorable little read. Not too involved yet not too simple. A great introduction for littles ones on one of the animals known to hunt truffles paired with the sweet story of a seemingly simple-minded pig.

This is for adults who love truffles and all involved, pig lovers, parents with children who they want to learn early on about some of the finer things in life, and for parents who just want a cute story about a plucky little pig.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is Your Kid a Francophile? Do you love Peter Mayle?, September 12, 2009

This book is a little dry. If your kid isn't already familiar with truffles and boars they may wonder why you selected this book for them. But if you are a fan of Peter Mayle and want to introduce your kid those little French nuances, this might be the book for you. It's about a piggy who can sniff out the yummy truffles, but not allowed to enjoy them himself, as he is owned by someone greedy. My paperback copy arrived a little ripped up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truffle Hunter, February 25, 2008
This review is from: The Truffle Hunter (Children's Books from Around the World) (Paperback)
I fell in love with this book immediately! the illustrations are wonderful, very engaging and humourous. They have lots of details which make you feel you are in France. The story is adorable,as is the pig. I loved it for myself as a lover of children's books and could hardly wait to share it with my grandchildren. Good intoduction to other countries and their different customs and food. Joyful read.
