Torn between asking Santa for a new blanket for his family and a hula hoop for himself, Truffle the mouse requests the latter, something he regrets as soon as nighttime arrives and Truffle and his siblings try to fit under their torn, threadbare cover. Truffle decides to wait for Santa to tell him he changed his mind. Currey's delightful watercolors create an attractive mouse world where anything can happen. Pages showing Truffle slowly eating a few morsels of food, hiking to the distant hill for a better view, and trying to stay awake as the snow begins to fall create plenty of anticipation for children. Then, just when danger is about to strike, Santa arrives to save the day. Currey's nostalgic vision of Santa holding Truffle in his hand is pleasant and satisfying. Another reviewer commented that this book was not reviewed by any of the major review journals, but it was -- School Library Journal reviewed it in 10/2000, and Publisher's Weekly and Booklist both reviewed it in 9/2000.

The book itself is nice to look at. The illustrations are cute and have that "warm fuzzy" feeling that's appropriate for a Christmas story. The story, however, is pretty disappointing. It is predictable and pretty saccharine in its sentiment. The artwork really makes this book, but unfortunately it's not enough to make it a great book. Cute, but not a first purchase.

I read this book only to find that it was a little TOO sentimental and sweet. But, I suppose Christmas books are supposed to be that way. Anna Currey is a wonderful illustrator. I've read Ms. Miller's Etiquette for Cats by Melissa Miller (with illustrations by Ms. Currey) and If you Should Meet a Crocodile (written and illustrated by Ms. Currey). So, for the illustrations alone, this book is worth buying. But, I read so many Christmas books only to find them full of sacharine. Genuine sweetness is rare. This book IS sweet and worth buying/reading at holiday time, but it's just not really part of my diet.

This is a really sweet book. The writing is sharp, with a few little jokes for the grown-ups thrown in. The illustrations are wonderful and the story is well paced with a happy ending. My boys are 6 and 9 and they still like it. A Christmas classic, in our house.
