My 6 year old Autistic son will be losing teeth soon, and I wanted to prepare him. I ordered 4 or 5 books on losing teeth and this is his absolute favorite. He has limited communication skills, but for some reason, this book speaks to him. He even now lets me put my fingers in his mouth to check for loose teeth!

I feel that after reading this book to him nearly every night (his choice), that he will not be frightened when his first tooth gets loose. I even think he'll be excited!

Some books we ended up with made it sound scary to lose a tooth, but this book doesn't. It does have one page where the older brother and dad each tease the boy about ways to get the tooth out, but it's handled in a non-scary way (at least for us--and my kid is afraid of a LOT).

Update: Nov 2010 - My son has now lost 7 teeth, each time a new one gets loose, he digs Truman's Loose Tooth out of the bookshelf and we read it for a few nights, then after a month or so when the tooth finally falls out, we read it again. He is nearly 9 years old now, and still loves this book! We have NEVER had a fear or tear with any of his lost teeth, and I attribute that success to this awesome book. He even asked me to pull one that was just dangling in his way! He still has fears of other things, but not of losing his teeth.

Cleverly authored by Kristine Wurm with creative illustrations from Michael Chestworth, Truman's Loose Tooth, is the entertaining picturebook tale of one little boy's life-changing experience when losing his first tooth. Capturing every aspect from concern, excitement, pride, uncertainty, and triumph, Truman's Loose Tooth carries its young readers through the enthralling story of a child's innermost thoughts arising from experiences that are common to every young reader. A welcome and popular addition to family, school, and community library picturebook collections, Truman's Loose Tooth is enthusiastically recommended as a heart-warming, "kid friendly" story with which children will readily identify.

Sometimes we forget how hard things are being a kid. This book helps parents remember how scary it was growing up and loosing your first tooth. I know my sibilings scared me to death about pulling my tooth out. It also helps kids understand that change is good and welcome. Growing up is hard books like these help everyone go through difficult times and get through them with success and not to be scared. I know my son loves it and we will read it many many more times.

This book offers wonderful illustrations and captivating text that draws children into the story. As a school counselor, I found that children easily relate to the experiences and emotions of losing their first tooth and really enjoy sharing that experience through the story of Truman. I would recommend this book for any young child...especially those in the tooth losing stage of life!!

What a wonderful book for children. I had forgotten how scary loosing a tooth can be to a child until I had the opportunity to read Truman's Loose Tooth to my nephew. I highly recommend this book not only for children but for anyone that might be facing a loss. Your smile your way through the whole story.

Truman is a freckle-faced, six-year-old, first grader. His every day activities include: sitting quietly at his desk, enjoying snacks, and playing with his best friend. But alas, one day something is different. Just as he was ready to head down the slide, like he does every day, he noticed his tooth did something strange. His tooth moved a little when his tongue touched it. Feeling a little woozy, he touched it with his finger and sure enough it wiggled. He had a loose tooth!

He seemed to temporarily forget about his loose tooth the next day as he concentrated on his school work. But he bit down on his pencil while contemplating the solution to a problem. His tooth flipped out of his mouth, hit his desk and rolled across the floor. Suddenly, retrieving his tooth, he felt much older, he was filled with pride. He had joined the ranks of the big kids who had lost a tooth. Truman is later introduced to that generous, fictional creature, the tooth fairy. He puts the tooth under his pillow and the next morning he finds a dollar.

This charming, colorful book describes a young boy's experience with losing his first tooth through the eyes of a child. It will open the lines of communication between you and your child, giving you the opportunity to explore various childhood experiences while letting them know they're not alone.

"Truman's Loose Tooth" received the "Ben Franklin" award for children's literature earlier this year. The expressive illustrations, by Michael Chesworth, brought Kristine Wurm's story to life, as I recalled the feeling of the wiggle of my own first loose tooth. I still shudder at the horror of a string tied to my tooth and the door knob. The toothless smiles of Truman and other first graders are reflective of class photos of first graders from my own children's photo album.

Repetitive phrases and frequent dialog in the story line make this a delightful story for reading aloud. Cleverly done facial expressions in the illustrations take on feelings of curiosity, concern, acceptance, pride and pleasure.

Kristine focuses on helping a child through the surprise, curiosity, and fright of loosing that first tooth.

This is a book that should be in the waiting room of every dentist's office, in the library of every first grade classroom and in the home of every preschool and first grade child. It is an ideal gift for children.
