This review is from: Trump: How to Get Rich (Hardcover)
If you've picked up "Trump: How to Get Rich" in hopes of learning the secrets or the path to become wealthy you'll be very disappointed BUT the book is still an interesting read. Here's the lowdown on the book.

WHAT IT IS NOT

Trump doesn't really tell you how to become rich. There are no tips on landing the high paying job or making the killer investments. So if you're looking for a manual to get rich you'll want to look elsewhere. Realistically you'll probably want to get a good personal finance book or a entrepreneurial book.

WHAT THIS BOOK IS

This is actually more of Trump's memoirs where he tells you the tales of some of his big deals he's made and his manual for having a SUCCESSFUL CAREER and life.

Among the gems he shares with you are:

1. How to recruit and hire good talent to work for you. (Hire people who WANT to do your work and are talented and loyal).

2. Get a job good. (Do something you enjoy)

3. Get the pay raise you want. (Ask the boss when he/she's in a good mood)

4. Make good investments. (Invest only in what you are knowledgeable about)

5. Timing is everything when it comes to making deals.

6. You need to know what the other guy is thinking when making deals and meet their needs

A lot of it is common sense really but hearing it from someone like Trump reinforces it.

The book is broken down into 6 main sections:

1. "The Donald J. Trump School of Business,"

2. "Your Personal Apprenticeship: Career Advice from the Donald,"

3. "Money, Money, Money, Money,"

4. "The Secrets of Negotiation"

5. "The Trump Lifestyle,"

6. "Inside the Apprentice."

In the first 3 sections he basically talks about those little gems we mentioned. In "The Secrets of Negotiation" he goes into the stories of how he made his biggest deals in real estate which is a fascinating read and is, to me, the best part of the book and where the true value in the book lies. He also gives you some tips on public speaking which is pretty valuable.

In "The Trump Lifestyle" he basically gives you the "week in the life of" treatment where he details his schedule in a typical week. Getting a peak into his life and how his business works is pretty fascinating to read and a bit inspiring but can also been seen somewhat as "fluff" for the book. It's a real insight though.

"Inside the Apprentice" is exactly what it is. He talks about how the show came about, how it was produced and gives you his opinion on the candidates.

Interspersed in the book The Donald also gives you his opinion on a lot of the various big wigs in business, politics, entertainment, etc. Trump comes across as a pretty fair guy but he also has his moments where you can tell he's got a gripe with some people (as the chapter "Sometimes You Just Need To Screw Them" tells you).

At the very end of the book is a little Appendix detailing all of Trump's various properties and ventures.

THE ANALYSIS

Again, the book isn't exactly what you'd think it is from the cover BUT Trump's stories and the look behind the scenes at the Trump Organization are interesting and you can take away some knowledge of what it's like to run a successful company and live the successful lifestyle. His tools for success again are pretty common sense you probably didn't need to pay to read that but if you look at the book as more of a memoir it's a real interesting read. Fans of The Apprentice will appreciate a look behind the show and a look into life at The Trump Organization (Carolyn, George, Robin and Norma or in here too).

THE VERDICT

Well, the book somewhat fails as a "How To Get Rich" book, but it succeeds as a memoir into the life of one of America's richest men.

So, if you want to learn how to get rich put your money into a good personal finance book BUT if you want to read about how one of America's most successful businessmen operates this is a great book for that.

If you're interested in what he says to say on this stuff, cool, pass otherwise

Mildly Recommended

If you want to create wealth (who doesn't) who better to learn from than a man who has been there and then some. One of the things that impresses me about Trump is that despite his great wealth, Mr. Trump is still quite a philanthropist as well contributing millions to charities.

I also love his new show The Apprentice. Looks like Trump is in top form.

2004 seems to be a great year for Donald Trump. Hit tv show and a best selling book and business is great. Hey Donald, I think you should run for President again. I bet you get more votes than Kerry does. (you would make a better President too!)

Congrats Mr. Trump on a great book on all of your success. And thank you for sharing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done Donald!, June 14, 2004

I have to admit, I was not always a big fan of Donald Trump. Like some others, I felt that Donald Trump was just a big egotistical, rich idiot. Then I met him in New York back in the 1990's. Quite to my surprise, he was congenial, very businesslike, but a nice guy.

I read The Art of The Deal and I followed some advice he gave me many years ago. I doubt if Donald will remember me but will be eternally grateful for the advice and help he so generously offered to me.

Trump is an excellent book. Ideal for anyone who wants to achieve the maximum in wealth. Reading this book is like being mentored by Donald one on one. He writes just as he speaks. And considering what this man has accomplished, he is definitely worth listening to.

Thank you Donald both for this great work and for that great advice many years ago in New York.

3.0 out of 5 stars entertaining autobio, April 2, 2004

I couldn't wait to purchase this book and read it, especially when it said there are five billion reasons to read this book.

If you are expecting this book to show you all the secrets of making money, this book definitely misleads from its title. Now that I have just finished, I'm not sure how much it is related to "How to Get Rich". Basically, Donald gives advices on negotiation, hard-work, basic money sense and how to be your best (just like him). May be these are the essential attributes of becoming successful and rich. By applying his advice, you could see some self improvement or feel richer for life but not necessarily financially richer.

It's a very concise and almost comical. Each section is short and cleverly titled, like a marketing schemes, and you actually have fun reading it. However, I find the description on a typical week of his life repetitive and boring. The last chapter on The Apprentice is a waste. If you watch the show, there's no point in reading it. Donald lists a lot of names and shows a lot personality in the writing. He complemented many MANY people but also didn't hold back on his dislikes and enemies.

Overall, the book should be appropriately titled as "How to be like The Donald", an autobiography by Donald Trump. Paying $20 to get inside the head of a flaunting real estate mogul is probably worth it, at least the book is entertaining like his show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you Donald!, June 15, 2004

I have read many books written by millionaires and have talked to many millionaires. But to be mentored by a BILLIONAIRE, that is awesome.

Whether you want to be rich, just enhance your financial well being or just want to take a peek into the mind of a billionaire, Donald Trump's new book is well worth your time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore 1 star reviews - they can't help it!, May 2, 2004
This review is from: Trump: How to Get Rich (Hardcover)
Poor, poor 1 star reviewers have nothing to do with their time but bash good books like this one by Donald Trump. These are the same people who post and repost endless helpful votes to those stupid anti-Bush books and would rather have you read some worthless financial b.s. by someone like Jane Bryant Quinn. What has she ever accomplished and who haas she ever helped to achieve wealth? Hello???

This book by Donald Trump shows you how to become rich. It that is your goal, I highly recommend it. On the other hand, if you prefer to spend all of time bashing good books, playing pc games with Grand Auto Theft and watch movies like Motel Hell and hawk books by disgruntled white house personel, then sorry I guess you will have to be satisfied with what you've got (I would rather have what Donald's got)

Good book for wealth builders. If you are happy with mediocre books, then go read Jane Bryant Quinns book.

2.0 out of 5 stars How to get $15 richer: don't buy this book!, April 2, 2004

This review is from: Trump: How to Get Rich (Hardcover)
If you've read *any* of Donald Trump's previous books (especially "The Art of the Deal" and "The Art of the Comeback") which were surprisingly fascinating, you're going to HATE this book. It's not worth your money, especially if you've read "The Art of the Comeback", which was an excellent book.

If you've never read a book by Donald Trump before, I would recommend his book, titled "The Art of the Deal" (which is coincidentally available on Amazon.com right now).

I gave this book two stars because there are a few things in this book that can't be found in his earlier editions: updated pics of his children; info on his new girlfriend Melania; and a new section on "The Apprentice." Otherwise, everything else in the book is material that is regurgitated from his previous books.

For someone who values high quality work, I'm shocked that he placed his name on this book.
