5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book, Thanks George Ross
Three years ago, when I became a Realtor, I was surprised that absolutely no part of the licensing course addressed negotiation--even though real estate agents have a fiduciary responsibility to negotiate on behalf of their clients. Nor are there any continuing-ed courses on the subject! Ever since, I've been questing after information that uses concrete examples and...

Chalk-full of information, much of which is also contained in "Trump Strategies for Real Estate," also by George Ross. If you have read "Trump Strategies for Real Estate," there is no need to also read "Trump Style Negotiation." Mr. Ross repeats many of the same stories contained in his first book, but elaborates on the negotiation details. Mr. Ross must have secured a...

Three years ago, when I became a Realtor, I was surprised that absolutely no part of the licensing course addressed negotiation--even though real estate agents have a fiduciary responsibility to negotiate on behalf of their clients. Nor are there any continuing-ed courses on the subject! Ever since, I've been questing after information that uses concrete examples and techniques that might strengthen my own homemade common-sense approach to negotiating. Win-win conceptual books are all well and good, but I want to shine my flashlight on the tough guy in the alley who doesn't care about win-win. Let's face it, a lot of negotiators couldn't care less about whether or not my client feels happy with the result of the negotiation, and they're not worrying about long-term business relationships. This is the only book I've found that gives me exactly what I've been wanting, a way to recognize various tactics and ways to meet them head-on, whether I'm wearing my velvet gloves or my boxing gloves. Thanks for the great book, George!

5.0 out of 5 stars More Practical Tactics by the "Trump-Style" Elucidator, December 30, 2006
After reading Mr. Ross' first book: 'Trump Strategies For Real Estate; Billionaire Lessons for the Small Investor', I couldn't wait to dig into this one. I noticed upon perusing his first release that I got a lot more out of his 'Trump insider' revelations than I ever have from Mr. Trump's books.

The man whose identity I learned of while watching 'The Apprentice' delivers again. He elaborates on many of the negotiating concepts he touched on in his real estate book, then goes much farther with examples along the way. He basically breaks the Trump Style down into eight essential principles:

1. Establish Trust, Frienship and Satisfaction with the other side.
2. Discover what the other side wants, determine his or her weaknesses, and uncover valuable hidden information.
3. Convince the other side that they're getting more than expected.
4. Use Timing, Deadlines, Deadlocks, and Delays to your advantage.
5. Employ psychological negotiating tactics.
6. Become an expert on the topic that you're negotiating.
7. Maintain flexibility and seek multiple solutions to every impasse.
8. Tap into powerful planning and organizational tools to help you win.

I really like the insights he gives pertaining to "the aura of legitimacy". I've found that an awareness of this particular negotiating gambit has been very helpful in my current negotiations for cost-effective advertising space. I'm now aware when this tactic is being used against me and I no longer fall prey to it.

The only thing that slightly irritated me while reading Mr. Ross' book on negotiating was contained on page 88. It was there that he interjected a bit of personal political opinion that I think is better left omitted from a business book.

Although the aforementioned gripe cannot be without influence from my own political views, I won't take a star away from my rating of George Ross' book on negotiation. In fact, as long as this guy keeps writing business books, I'll keep buying them and reading them. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review for Trump-Style Negotiation, October 22, 2006

Mr. Ross really does describe some very useful negotiating practices and strategies. I wished that I had known of this book before I purchased my house. I would have been better prepared and fared better in my negotiations. After reading this book you will make a better deal for yourself based on proven strategies and not emotion.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can save money before you spend it., October 14, 2007

I was stuck with a truck that I could not trade in. I went to several dealers and just could not get the sales people to come to my terms. I had no money for a down payment and no one would pay off my current loan. Then after reading this book I not only negotiated a great deal but I learned how to do it through e-mail. This book will get the deal done. This book is a must have for anyone who negotiates deals not only in real estate but in any purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tips for business negotiators, March 1, 2007
Real estate lawyer and veteran negotiator George Ross proves that when someone with 50 years of experience writes a book, it has the potential to be essential reading. He is perhaps best known for being Donald Trump's subdued partner on The Apprentice television show, but Ross worked with Manhattan's most competitive real-estate moguls, at one time making a deal per week. His real-estate stories make for good reading. He provides less detail about his more recent work with Trump, but uses even those stories to drive home his points. We recommend this book to both experienced negotiators and novices who want to learn tactics they can use in transactions from buying cars and real estate to improving their interpersonal relationships.

I was a little hesitant to buy this because the advise wasn't coming directly from Trump himself, but my fears were quickly taken away, and my only disappointment was waiting so long to buy this book! George breaks down the stategies he uses before and during every negotiation. The lessons taught in this book can not only be used in big time negotiations, like those carried out by Trump and Ross, but also in you day to day experiences. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book on negotiating, August 26, 2009
This review is from: Trump-Style Negotiation: Powerful Strategies and Tactics for Mastering Every Deal (Paperback)
In business, we are told to negotiate, but we really have no idea how to do it even though we've done it since childhood. Some might think that negotiating is all about getting the best deal, but this is not what the author is teaching. Negotiation is about building trust, learning what the other side wants, becoming an expert on the subject you are negotiating, and understanding human psychology. People are not only motivated by money. Instead, they might be more interested in prestige, recognition, or personal satisfaction. I was surprised to learn that Trump doesn't just negotiate to gain for himself, but also to make sure that the other side is satisfied and happy with the outcome. In other words, he is looking for a win-win situation. If you are serious about improving your negotiating skills, this book will not disappoint you.

Negotiating is a necessary and challenging feature of business life. George Ross describes the Trump-Style negotiation where he highlights the fact that confident and competent negotiators can achieve exceptional results. Successfully concluding a difficult negotiation is often a most exhilarating and satisfying experience to those involved.

Ross, in describing the tactics that Trump used to reach the top, came up with a book packed with practical advice and important tools that one can use in any negotiating process, whether it be in drafting a contract, settling disputes, promotion discussions, salary reviews, among others.

"Trump-Style Negotiation: Powerful Strategies and Tactics for Mastering Every Deal" is a high quality book that is an accessible guide that readers in any field should find handy and helpful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Get an editor, May 4, 2007
I can honestly say it has been a few years since I came across a blatant editorial error in a book. This book had dozens of errors. Missing words in sentences, repeated stories. The folks at Wiley really did Mr. Ross an injustice here. The editing is atrocious.
