It is quite amazing when you look at vK's discographie were he probably sold least but usually scored highest: It's with the Honegger's, the Shostakvichs (e.g. No10), the Mahlers (No9 live), the Alpine Symphony (Strauss); in other words with recordings that lie more outside the mainstream; and this one is yet another one as well: I didn't even know that he had recorded any trumpet concertos! The more surprised I was when I found this one for seven dollars for sale on the back-shelves in a second class no-name record store...
I own probably more than 30 recordings of the Berlin Philharmonic, but seldomly have I heard them in a better, crisper, more elegant shape; seldomly have I heard vK's tempi so sharp and to the point and yet so easy coming and so natural. If you want to know why they are often considered one of the best orchestras in the world, buy this CD. And Andre's Trumpet is beyond praise, so supernatural, it shines rare and lonely. This is a hauntingly beautiful CD! It is not by accident that EMI chose this as one of their "Great Recordings of the Century". Strangely enough, many of vK's EMI recordings are outstandingly better than his often overproduced DG counterparts...

Truly a hidden jewel for the ages.

As a trumpet player myself, the styles and sounds of Maurice Andre are what I try to copy when I perform, thus this particular CD has been of incredible worth to me! This CD should be owned by every aspiring trumpet player and every trumpet enthusiast in the world!
