A Mesmerizing Tale, March 7, 2008
This review is from: Trunk Piece (Paperback)
Joseph Dougherty's "Trunk Piece" pulled me into it like a really good movie trailer pulls you into the theater. I mean the old kind of trailers that whetted your appetite and made you HAVE to know what happens next, not the new ones that throw up every little tidbit they can scramble together giving away everything desperate to trick you into buying a ticket.
And once the lights go down you won't be able to peel your eyes off one page and the next until you reach the heart-satisfying, thrilling and altogether unexpected release of this beautiful novel. I couldn't.
This is a murder story and it throbs with delicious twists and characters that live and breathe and get mad. And there's poetry. And funny funny stuff. And terrific dialogue that tickles and tells the truth.
It's about Hollywood. It's about making movies. It's about writing. There's a definite Raymond Chandler vibe here that vibrates throughout but it is much more than that. It's about making peace with the sometimes not so pleasant outcomes of the choices we make.
Buy this book and read it when it arrives. Don't go to the movies or watch TV. Read "Trunk Piece" instead. The film in your head will be much better than anything else you can find.
