Good strong blade. Can't see bending this one. Really like the ash wooden handle. I'm no heavyweight so I did the step, pry, and step method. Really bore down a time or two. (I have broken a few shovel handles in my young and dumb days so I have used hand tools plenty of times.) A slight amount of play at the join. The handle is joined with a pin. I looked at the U shape designs and they looked too easy to bend. Like the idea of your weight centered over the blade but this one convinced me it is not important. I didn't sharpen the blade and I don't think it's needed. Nice solid tool.

I have used it quite a bit now. I pried down a few times pretty good and the join has a bit of flex. This would be the failure point. This is a modern designed tool as far as a lighter gauge metal. Almost all new tools are lighter and probably easier to break. I have come to the conclusion that cost of resources, profit margin etc, this is the way it will be for most tools. Most things are not made like they used to be and that is progress and reality. Still a good tool that if I break it, I deserved it. Not the only name brand tool with this trend.

** 4/26/13 I wonder if they have changed the construction. Mine is still solid. No play at the join at all unless I am really applying pressure and I have edged over 200ft of walk and a few non standard tasks too. Getting ready to get it out again. Still haven't sharpened it and maybe I should but working as intended. I'm about 170 and have pried down pretty good a few times. I made sure I did undercut well then pried. Sorry if any have had bad luck with this after my review. Ash handle a plus for me.

I'm mystified by the five star reviews of this. It arrived with the joint loose; the shovelhead is merely hanging from a pin and rocks back and forth in the joint (ie, the wooden handle is too small for the joint). The metal blade is extremely lightweight/thin and bent the very first time i tried it on the edge of my ordinary lawn sod (which was pre-wetted, even- this was not tough nor dry dirt). It was not sharp enough to cut through even a light layer of grass at the edge of my lawn. I'm returning it.

This has a one-piece forged head. No joints or welds to break. Nice flanges on upper edge to step on. Cuts through turf well right out of the box with no sharpening. For heavy edging work this is better than trying to use a string trimmer. Best of all, no need for gas or stringing an electrical cord.

This is a very hardy yard tool and I have so far used it often. Great price too. I thought this would be one of those things I use only once, but find myself pulling it put a lot for a nice clean line when working around my 2 acre yard.
