I use a maul to split all my wood, usually 2 cords per year of hard wood. I started with a 6 pound home depot special (the one with the composite/plastic handle). With Heavy use and especially when using the reverse side of that maul to pound a wedge in, I SPLIT IT! Forged dropped steel my butt!
SO I went online and found this beast! Im a big guy (265lbs), I hit the gym and enjoy powerlifting, so I figured I could handle a 12lb maul no problem. Its a heavy sucker, but isn't too bad. HOWEVER, I let my wife's brother try it out (he's a "normal guy", 5'8" about 160lbs.) and he couldnt really handle this maul. Simply too heavy for him to swing overhead over and over again. That said, I highly recommend this maul for a "Strong guy" who can handle it, not for someone who doesn't lift weights at the gym tho... its simply too heavy.
I love that its all steel, heavy welding makes it all 1 piece. The thing seems indestructible. I DISLIKE the handle. as the other reviewers have said, the handle is about 4-6inches too short for my liking. the rubber grip is nice, but the length is definitely too short for an optimum swing.
I used on Red Oak sections, about 14inches to 16 inches in diameter.. a few swings and Im through it with this maul. It's a BEAST for larger diameter logs!
So, again.... if youre a gym-buff or a large man, this is the maul for you.... if youre not, this maul may be too heavy and hard on your back! Handle is shorter than Id like, but the shear weight of this maul is enough to drive thru big logs. A good buy for me.
