5.0 out of 5 stars Truper Herramientas #MD20HC 20LB Sledge Hammer
This is a well made hammer. Forged of SAE 1045 steel, heat treated and tempered to a nominal face hardness of Rockwell C 52. (From specifications submitted by the manufacturer in a government purchasing contract available online.) The forging is smooth, the surface left unfinished. The handle is of good quality hickory, well fitted and wedged (tubular wedge), smoothly...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good head, slippery handle
I work with a travelling circus and this is a great all purpose sledgehammer for driving stakes and setting up tents and securing the tiger run lines. My only complaint is that the hickory handle gets a little slippery when wet. I recommend this sledgehammer but make sure that you apply plenty of tape or adhesive material on the handle, or make sure you NEVER USE IT IN...

This is a well made hammer. Forged of SAE 1045 steel, heat treated and tempered to a nominal face hardness of Rockwell C 52. (From specifications submitted by the manufacturer in a government purchasing contract available online.) The forging is smooth, the surface left unfinished. The handle is of good quality hickory, well fitted and wedged (tubular wedge), smoothly finished with polyurethane varnish. It's plenty sturdy for the size and use of the hammer, and replaceable without too much difficulty if broken. Note that the faces of this hammer are machined after heat treating to a shallow conical crown, with a deep bevel around the edges. (The bevel is probably intended to reduce dangerous "mushrooming" and spalling of the edges in use.) The machined surface is unpolished, left with circular grooving (like a record.) For uses where a flat striking face is important, this will be a drawback, but the crowning reduces bending or displacement of the struck object (i.e., flying wedges) if the impact is not quite straight. An edge hit on the bevel, however, could produce a vigorous displacement. My hammer did come with a couple of small dents in the faces (one with a small crack in it), probably from striking other hammers in handling during production, a 1mm diameter and height sharp burr or nipple in the center of one face where the machining didn't quite make it to the center, and the other face is irregularly crowned with a steeper conical profile in the center. Minor flaws that are relatively unimportant in the uses to which a sledgehammer is normally put. This hammer is sold for a much lower price than competitors' products, and is a very good value for the money. It will also give the user a very good physical workout! :-) Truper Herramientas #MD20HC 20LB Sledge Hammer

I use the sledge for splitting wood and it's an important key to getting the job done. But for those who are not experienced using one I suggest before buying a sledge this heavy you go to your local hardware store and try a couple so you get the right weight for you. This is a heavy sledge and bigger is not necessarily better.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Daddy" Sledge Hammer!, August 31, 2008

Wow ... It's Big, It's Tough, It's the Daddy .... I pull this baby out <smile> People's eyes pop! It'll knock a pile to bedrock or break through a 16 inch concrete block and at 20 pounds it will separate the men from the boys. Check with your doctor to see if you are in physical shape to swing it! <smile>
