4.0 out of 5 stars GP01 - what a start for the TtDJ!, May 29, 2004
This review is from: Trust the DJ: Gp01 (Audio CD)
"Being a summer release, I thought yo'd likt it latin..." as was said in the linear notes of this CD by GP. And boy - he put on some pretty kickin' latin cuts! This is the first of Gilles Peterson's five cd's on the famous Trust the DJ label series and it was one heck of a start. Gilles Peterson is phenomenal DJ and producer out of the UK with an staggering music collection - when you see his name featured you know you're bound to hear something you've never heard before and seeing his name is pretty much synonymous with "eclectic".

This 2001 release goes in and out of so many styles. The cd starts out with a soul and underground style with Luomo and Herbert kickin in a few cuts. You have some cool beats with Max Fresh and then an off the wall electronic cut (admittedly not my favorite) by Ptaah. The Afronaught track "Transcend Me" will take you to a Patrick Forge sort of realm with its nightlife vibe. The track has a great kick to it, good breaks and that customary soul vocal. But then it slows down when you're taken' into the latin rythms with the breezy "Find an Oasis" - the full cut at that! Compost's Truby Trio kicks in with a popular cut, Marcos Valle's Online also features and the cd actually ends with "Nina" by Suv. But two highlights were the simple latin feel of the remixed "Umba Bada Uma?" which had a nice basic guitar glide and electronic feel. And finally, Sunaga t' Experience's "It's You" remixed by Nicola Conte was a pretty tough to find cut. It was given the standard jazzafication and you can hear the Soulstance mixed in it too and... who's voice was that?

I definitely recommend this. It's a bit older and you may see some of the cuts and say you already have Marcos Valle's cuts and a few others on cd's that have been released since then. But I picked this one up before Break & Bossa 5 or Brazilectro 5 and what can I say besides it was here before either of them - and on Valle's cd first? The Conte remix is cool because if you're a Schema or Stereo Deluxe (Mo Horizons) fan you'll sit back and say: "he got that piece from this song and that one from that song..." etc. Enjoy! And remember - there are 5 of these now, and GP has a whole slew of World Wide and mix projects out there; including a brand new one that's a take of him in Brazil. Just be careful of overlap. The vibe on this is definitely more laid back than Patrick Forge's PF01 and even PF02.
