Trusting Your Instincts Will Lead To Love, July 21, 2008
This review is from: Trust in Love (Paperback)
Vashti Ann Reed, in her debut novel Trust in Love, introduces readers to Danita Johnson. Danita is the founder of a unique organization known as "Wait For Me." Wait For Me provides job and services for retired senior citizens; yet, due to bad business decisions, the company is on the verge of going under. Danita decides to apply for a grant from the Penn-Atkinson Foundation. The only thing that stands in her way is Cullen Powers. Cullen is the owner of a company that provides prosthesis for the disadvantage and he has also applied for the grant. Danita is hopelessly attracted to him.
Reed's novel was a fun and enjoyable story to read. The characters struggled with their attractions as they vigorously campaigned to win the grant for their worthy organizations. Reed also provided a unique side story that was interesting and ultimately leads them to not only trust each other but also their growing feelings for one another. This is definitely a very good summer read.

Trust in Love, December 30, 2008
This review is from: Trust in Love (Paperback)
On the verge of losing her business, Danita Johnson has one last option on the table, securing a grant from a foundation that helps companies like hers. Companies making a difference! Her competitor for the $100,000 grant is Cullen Powers, a man who designs prosthetic devices and whose cause is just as worthy as her own. Unable to chance any distractions in her quest for the grant Cullen's relentless attention is something she has to ignore considering her past history with men and business decisions.
Cullen is shocked at his immediate attraction to Alexa, the first woman since the death of his wife that makes him want to risk his heart again. Her wariness and suspicion of his attention does nothing to stop his ever evolving fascination with a woman so committed to the seniors she serves.
As Alexa and Cullen attempt to break down barriers brought on by the past, Cullen's need for help may cause Alexa to lose everything she's worked so hard for.
In life sometimes we have to leave behind our fears and insecurities if we really want to give love a fighting chance. Trust in Love provided a glaring example of how keeping our mind on the past can wreck havoc on our present and future. Cullen Powers is definitely the Knight in Shining Armor for those he cares about. Willing to put his heart and soul on the line even when he wasn't receiving the same consideration in turn showed how noble in spirit he truly was.
Not sure what it is about heroines with too much baggage but this is the second book this weekend where I wasn't able to connect to the female lead. I wonder if there are so many single women because we're unable to move on from past hurts. Alexa seemed to be such an intelligent woman at times yet seemed unable to make the best decisions in her personal life, even when she had a good thing staring her in the face. Vashti Ann Reed created a story with two dynamic business people and I found their businesses totally fascinating, I just wished sometimes the heroines in a story wouldn't make the men work so hard to make up for mistakes of others. All and all this is a delicate romance that I'm sure readers will enjoy.
One side note, the backdrop story of domestic abuse was handled graciously and with care. Kudos to Vashti Ann Reed!

No love without trust..., August 11, 2008
This review is from: Trust in Love (Paperback)
Danita Johnson has one important goal and that is to win a grant for $100,000 to keep her agency, Wait For Me, open. However, she is competing against another worthy recipient owned by Cullen Powers. TRUST IN LOVE takes readers on a roller coaster ride as each tries to win the grant, but try to not allow their personal attraction come between them. For Danita, she cannot let go of her past hurts and trusting Cullen isn't easy, but when they find themselves often together, their feelings for one another cannot be denied. The question is, whether Danita can trust in Cullen enough to put the grant and her past behind her to find true love.
TRUST IN LOVE is Reed's debut romance. The battling between the couple and the tug of war seem to go on for much too long, which for me, made it hard to connect with the couple or even feel their romance unfold. The love between the two didn't transpire for me because the tension of the grant and the trust issues for the female character just were overly drawn out. Reed did a wonderful job with the issue of domestic violence and captured the true essence of fear and the struggle a person feels when involved in such a situation. Although the story follows the traditional method of romance novels, too long in the conflict realm inhibited the characters and the romance wasn't as unadulterated as I would have liked. Readers, however, can look forward to a solidly written book.
